Historia
A longtime trauma worker, Laura van Dernoot Lipsky offers a deep and empathetic survey of the often-unrecognized toll on those working to make the world a better place. We may feel tired, cynical, numb, or like we can never do enough. These, and other symptoms, affect us individually and collectively, sapping the energy and effectiveness we so desperately need if we are to benefit humankind, other animals, and the planet itself. Through Trauma Stewardship, we are called to meet these challenges in an intentional way.

A bit dated, but great overall
Revisado: 09-20-22
I wish they had professional narrators and storytellers; the choppy reading was distracting and I could hear some of the other contributors turning pages in the background as they were reading.
I didn’t realize how old this book was until the author kept talking about critical incident stress debriefing, which is an outdated method of handling trauma after traumatic events and can be harmful in a lot of situations. But a good amount of the information in this book, especially the second half, is timeless and useful.

Historia
In Trauma and Memory, best-selling author Dr. Peter Levine (creator of the Somatic Experiencing approach) tackles one of the most difficult and controversial questions of PTSD/trauma therapy: Can we trust our memories? While some argue that traumatic memories are unreliable and not useful, others insist that we absolutely must rely on memory to make sense of past experience. Dr. Levine suggests that there are elements of truth in both camps.

Historia
Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. Author Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women.

Great book, performance is a bit rough
Revisado: 03-19-20
This is a wonderful overview of intersectionality, and how important it is if we truly want to call ourselves feminists. Mikki has a unique perspective and brings a much needed voice to the conversation.
That said, the literal reading of it was a bit inconsistent in its speed, and sometimes the pitch of her voice would go up half an octave and then back down to her normal register. Overall, though, if you aren’t too bothered by that sort of thing then this book is definitely worth it!

Historia
A beautiful, startling, and candid memoir about growing up without boundaries, in which Ariel Leve recalls with candor and sensitivity the turbulent time she endured as the only child of an unstable poet for a mother and a beloved but largely absent father, and explores the consequences of a psychologically harrowing childhood as she seeks refuge from the past and recovers what was lost.

If I could give a million stars to the performance, I would. Martha was the perfect narrator to give voice to Ariel’s story, and it’s a voice that needs to be heard.

Historia
In this extraordinary work, Beth Macy takes us into the epicenter of a national drama that has unfolded over two decades. From the labs and marketing departments of big pharma to local doctor's offices; wealthy suburbs to distressed small communities in Central Appalachia; from distant cities to once-idyllic farm towns; the spread of opioid addiction follows a tortuous trajectory that illustrates how this crisis has persisted for so long and become so firmly entrenched.

So good
Revisado: 01-09-19
The author stumbled over her words at times, and her cadence isn’t conducive to reading/storytelling, but otherwise the content of this book is fantastic and needs to be heard by everyone.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

This is necessary
Revisado: 10-03-18
This book is uncomfortable. And if it is, then this book is working. It’s doing its job. With its logical research and cogent reasoning, Robin’s writing style is perfect for this subject. It doesn’t play at our emotions, or try to elicit a response that makes us feel good. It brings objective facts to the table, ones that show us our blind spots so we can start growing and work intentionally toward being less racist.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Brilliant
Revisado: 09-26-18
The performance was great, the story so relevant and needed in days like this. Angie Thomas has a voice that needs to be heard by everyone: readers, scholars, activists, pacifists, journalists, young children, teens, adults, and most specifically white people like me. Because without stories like these, we wouldn’t be given the gift of this perspective that’s aching to be seen.

Brilliant
Revisado: 08-26-18
This book is everything; so brilliantly written, the characters fully formed in all of their dysfunctional glory, and the topic - no small obstacle for one to read or write about - is one of the most important subjects to bring to light in this insane time.
I look forward to more of Ms. Honeyman’s books. This is definitely a new favorite!
