Historia
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

Not bad!
Revisado: 11-03-17
I liked this. There were a few cliches but overall it was a well written detective book. It’s more cartoonish than grit but if you’re looking for a fun who-done-it, you could definitely do a lot worse in the Irish detective realm.
Narrator Steven Crossley was pretty good but he sounded (to my Americans ears) more like upper class English who uses Irish idioms. It’s explained that the character went to boarding school in London and lost his accent but the rest of his Irish characters never sounded Irish. Seemed like a style choice. Like I said, I’m American so I’m probably out of my element here anyway. His women were good—they didn’t sound too breathy or shrill. He made the tween characters sound like young kids though which I found confusing at times because I had to second guess ages but I suspect that could have been prevented by paying closer attention. Overall I liked his narration and am probably too critical because I just finished a series narrated by Roy Doltrice.

Historia
Tom Cruise and John Travolta say the Church of Scientology is a force for good. Others disagree. Award-winning journalist John Sweeney investigated the Church for more than half a decade. During that time he was intimidated, spied on, and followed, and the results were spectacular: Sweeney lost his temper with the Church's spokesman on camera, and his infamous 'exploding tomato' clip was seen by millions around the world.

Fun listen
Revisado: 11-02-17
If you’re looking for a hard hitting expose about Scientology, this isn’t it. This is Sweeney explaining in detail how his bbc doc about Scientology came to be. Not to say that you won’t learn something about how the organization operates.
His style reminds me of Jon Ronson where he takes the reader along with his journalistic investigation.
It’s funny and weird.

Weird audio?
Revisado: 12-28-16
I liked the narrator but the volume at the end of the sentence would frequently go down so that the last syllable of many words would sound bumbled of phased out. It was really distracting. A shorter book I might be able to tolerate but I can't really hang with 50-something hours of that.
I'm going to actually physically read this one, I think because I've heard so many good things.

Historia
Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

Historia
Before the movie, this is the novel that gave life to Hawkeye Pierce, Trapper John, Hot Lips Houlihan, Frank Burns, Radar O'Reilly, and the rest of the gang that made the 4077th MASH like no other place in Korea or on earth. The doctors who worked in the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) during the Korean War were well trained but, like most soldiers sent to fight a war, too young for the job. In the words of the author, "a few flipped their lids, but most of them just raised hell, in a variety of ways and degrees."

Was so surprised by how good this book is
Revisado: 07-15-15
Funny, clever and dark. It sat in my que for months. It became one of those books that I told myself I'd have to get around to. I'm so glad I finally did because it instantly has become a favorite. I'll probably listen to it again soon.

Historia
From the Sunday Times top ten bestselling author of The Psychopath Test, a captivating and brilliant exploration of one of our world's most underappreciated forces: shame. 'It's about the terror, isn't it?' 'The terror of what?' I said. 'The terror of being found out.' For the past three years, Jon Ronson has travelled the world meeting recipients of high-profile public shamings. The shamed are people like us - people who, say, made a joke on social media that came out badly, or made a mistake at work.

Really interesting book
Revisado: 07-07-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. In the age of social media, I think it's a great reminder that anything one posts online is very public and there are serious consequences if what is posted is on the wrong side of public opinion.
What was one of the most memorable moments of So You've Been Publicly Shamed?
The author goes to a couple day retreat where he's open and honest with everyone in the room. It was hilarious.
What about Jon Ronson’s performance did you like?
I like British narrators.
Any additional comments?
I really liked this book and I learned a great deal. I feel like I take my anonymity on the internet for granted. Often I don't consider the humanity of the people in memes or internet controversies. Hearing the other side of this sort of situation put things into perspective. I was never the sort to buy a ticket to ride the shaming-train but I like the idea of being empathetic towards these sorts of non-scandals. Remembering that peoples lives are not entertainment, that this could easily happen to me or someone I know, I think is really important.

A fascinating guided tour of the complex, fast-moving, and influential world of algorithms - what they are, why they’re such powerful predictors of human behavior, and where they’re headed next. Algorithms exert an extraordinary level of influence on our everyday lives - from dating websites and financial trading floors, through to online retailing and internet searches - Google's search algorithm is now a more closely guarded commercial secret than the recipe for Coca-Cola.

Just read Conversations With Jorge Borgollio since the writer spent the majority of this book referencing that one. The final chapter tells you how to pray on the rosary...I'm not sure why it was included.

Great book
Revisado: 06-24-15
I really loved this book because it felt like I got to sit in on an honest conversation with the Pope. I learned about his philosophy concerning a variety of social, political and religious issues. I'm not a religious person and I would recommend other non-religious people listen to this book as it wasn't preachy.
