Must read
Revisado: 11-18-23
I was born in 1949. We didn’t really learn much about the Holocaust except in general terms. Anne Frank, yes. The subject of Jews murdered as a people, yes. We didn’t get these personal stories of what was endured by the individuals targeted by Fascists during that war. This book shows I’ll be required reading in every high school & college.

A true-crime masterpiece
Revisado: 12-21-20
I first heard about Michelle McNamara after listening to a couple podcasts that mentioned her around the time of her death. I wasn’t sure I wanted to read it, partly because she died before completing the book, but partly because I was afraid of the subject. I didn’t know anything about the GSK, & I wasn’t sure I wanted to. I watched the HBO documentary, & decided to take a chance. I am so glad I did. The details she was able to glean from boxes & boxes of 30-year-old files is astounding. She made it so real - I could hear the footsteps prowling neighborhoods, see the shadowy figure creeping across the yards in its search for the perfect target. The world lost an amazing investigator with the death of Michelle.

Historia
Washington Post national investigative reporter Carol Leonnig and White House bureau chief Philip Rucker, both Pulitzer Prize winners, provide the definitive insider narrative of Donald Trump's unique presidency with shocking new reporting and insight into its implications. Here, for the first time, certain officials who felt honor-bound not to divulge what they witnessed in positions of trust tell the truth for the benefit of history.

A compelling book
Revisado: 03-04-20
This is an excellent in-depth look at the first three years of Trump, and it makes me worry for what the future may hold. Some of the stories have been endlessly reported in the news, but the authors have dug deeper and found sources who had not previously spoken out.
I'm not sure what the complaints about the narration are about. It's not a fiction book, it's very detailed, and the narration fits that premise. I did not find her narration robotic at all.

Historia
The fourth book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Cibola Burn sees the crew of the Rocinante on a new frontier, as the rush to colonize the new planets threatens to outrun law and order and give way to war and chaos. Enter a new frontier. "An empty apartment, a missing family, that's creepy. But this is like finding a military base with no one on it. Fighters and tanks idling on the runway with no drivers. This is bad juju. Something wrong happened here. What you should do is tell everyone to leave".

The beautiful planet Pern seemed a paradise to its new colonists - until unimaginable terror turned it into hell. Suddenly deadly spores were falling like silver threads from the sky, devouring everything - and everyone - in their path. It began to look as if the colony, cut off from Earth and lacking the resources to combat the menace, was doomed.

A good start to a series
Revisado: 12-02-18
I had read this book several years ago, and wanted to read more in the series, so I listened to this one to get reintroduced to the main character. I found the narrator to not be great at differentiating multiple characters' voices, and sometime I just couldn't tell who the speaker was, unless the name of the speaker was revealed. I found the solution to the mystery to be a complete surprise; there is nothing in the book that even hinted at the identity of the murderer. I'm not sure what I thought about that technique; I'll see if that continues in later books

The second book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Caliban's War shows a solar system on the brink of war, and the only hope of peace rests on James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante's shoulders. We are not alone. On Ganymede, breadbasket of the outer planets, a Martian marine watches as her platoon is slaughtered by a monstrous supersoldier. On Earth, a high-level politician struggles to prevent interplanetary war from reigniting. And on Venus, an alien protomolecule has overrun the planet, wreaking massive, mysterious changes.

Excellent story & narration
Revisado: 12-02-18
I love this series. I am so ready to get on a space ship to Mars, or the asteroid belt, or the moons of the outer planets. It makes me hope that we do send a mission to Mars, maybe in my granddaughter's lifetime. The proto-molecule does scare me, and I look forward to seeing what other horrors it develops into in the series. I must admit the political machinations sometimes confuse me, and I don't always get the inside jokes, but overall the development of the characters and settings keeps me going.

Overall I enjoyed this book, but, dang, about a quarter of it could have been edited out. I set the speed at 120, because the reading moves so slowly. I don't know if I will continue the series, because of the slow pace.

Historia
Life has been pretty great for Sebastian Snow. The Emporium is thriving and his relationship with NYPD homicide detective Calvin Winter is everything he's ever wanted. But then an unknown assailant smashes the Emporium's window and leaves a peculiar note. Sebastian is quickly swept up in a series of grisly yet seemingly unrelated murders. The only connection tying the deaths together are curiosities from the lost museum of P.T. Barnum.

Good story, narration detracts a bit
Revisado: 02-26-18
I enjoy the Snow and Winter stories; it's fun to see the pickles Seb gets himself into, and Calvin always saves him. I do find the narration distracting. The narrator makes an odd audible inhalation after each sentence, almost a grunt. That detracted from my enjoyment of the book. I was able to sort of ignore it.

In rural, impoverished Burgoyne County, New York, a pattern of strange deaths begins to emerge: Adolescent boys and girls are found murdered, their corpses left hanging in gruesome, ritualistic fashion. A modern Allienist
Revisado: 02-10-18
I found this book fascinating. It's set in modern times, as opposed to the 1890's of the previous two novels, but the protagonists are followers of Lazlo Kreizler. I'm not sure I really understand the difference between modern forensics and the methods practiced by the team in this book, but if this is a true reflection of the author's beliefs, it does cast some doubt on the methods used in modern crime investigation. I loved the characters, and especially TJ's special "pet."
