The narration ruined it for me
Revisado: 11-06-20
Liked the story. Previously read it & looked forward to an audiobook from an author I enjoy.
The narration was so bad I struggled to get through the story. I had to stop listening at points & put it away for a few days at a time. Characters were inconsistent. The portrayal of the FL took me out of the story each time.
A few issues with editing but really this was not the narrator for this story, in my opinion. Likely should have had a make & female narrator.

... fallen so completely in love with 2 characters so quickly!
I absolutely loved everything about this book. I literally laughed (out loud!), cried, and truly felt every emotion in between. I completely binged this book over 2 days & when I wasn't listening, I was thinking about it.

My one piece of advice: Never kiss a stranger. See, I kind of kissed this sexy man at the bar on a dare once, and it turns out he’s a Royal Fae destined to be my mate. Now I’ve been dragged to the Elemental Fae Academy to control the powers I unlocked that night. So kissing? Yeah, that won’t happen again. Nope.

I enjoy fae stories & this world sucked me right in.
It's great to hear a RH book that's not so focused on the sexual relationships. Yes, it's a topic, but the bonds are forming naturally, both as part of the story & emotional character development. They aren't forced just to get to the heated stuff.
I enjoyed this narrator & the distinct character performances.
It's rare that I listen to a book & then want to pick up in the next actual book, rather than awaiting the audio version. That's what I'm off to do, because I'm very curious as to what's next!

I'm not too proud to admit that finding Mr. Right involves swiping right. Right? Welcome to dating in avocado toastland. Here I am, on my first blind date, ever, courtesy of a smartphone app and my two annoying best friends. So what is Chris "Fletch" Fletcher doing, walking across the room, looking at his phone like he's pattern matching a picture to find a real person he's never met before? Oh. Oh, no. The guy I drop-kicked in seventh grade cannot be my blind date. The guy who earned me this infernal nickname.

Moments of laugh out loud humor, mixed with some introspective character self analysis moments. I found these characters to be the most relatable in the series. Narrator was a great match for the story.

Sean McBride is the bad boy/man-whore of the Seattle Knights football team. And he is happy to embrace the title. He's young. Rich. Handsome. And he's one of the best wide receivers in the game. Why shouldn't he take advantage of all the perks? Women throw themselves at him. Wouldn't it be rude not to catch them?

Good story, it flowed well and was the perfect length. I could have dinne without the pointless manufactured drama stunt in the last 40 minutes... replaced by something that just made a little more sense as a challenge for the lead characters.
Great narration, my first with this narrator.

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special 12-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted fans of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Solid succession to The Shining
Revisado: 02-26-20
My husband and I listened to this book together during our work commute. Last fall we listen to The Shining - a Stephen King 1st for me - and then watched the movie at Christmas. We started this just after the new year.
We both agree that the narration was superb, even though the bar was set high with The Shining... it'd be hard to live up to that which will was, by far, the best narration I've ever heard in a book. But this one was but just as impressive.
I've learned that you have to be patient with Stephen King books. In just these 2, I see that he takes a lot of time to plant seeds and work out the landscape, and you have to trust in the fact that the many hours of time you invest in listening to what seems like simple setup, really does eventually pay off and fits together like a big puzzle. Not all authors can do that - often they just talk on and on with no real purpose. But with these books there's definitely a purpose with every word written.
We thought about this review for a couple of days because there were something nagging at each of us. We finally figured out that while there were some great thriller highs throughout the story, in the end singer of the earlier scenes overshadowed what should have been the climatic showdown. There was nothing wrong with the end but we felt there was much more anticipation, tension, and thrill in some of the early scenes than what was built up to at the end.
Over all a solid book, especially in a world where sequels are often very disappointing

Pleasant Surprise
Revisado: 02-20-20
Sometimes books about elves, fae, & fantasy lands get a little silly. This is not one of those books.
The detailed descriptions of the world, interconnecting species/characters, and the story itself was impressive & really painted a visual. The narration was outstanding and I always knew which character was 'speaking' before being name.
Minor criticisms are that the climax could have been a little more intense/dramatic, it could have been a bit shorter overall (it seemed to slow in the last 2-3 hours), and the repetition of the female lead's description of the male lead (I heard him described as beautiful/perfect/amazing & the color of his eyes so much, my own eyes were rolling in the last hour or so).

Historia
From the time I was a little girl, I knew I was going to follow in my father’s footsteps. The art form of tattooing always intrigued me, and it became my life’s goal to put my work on other people’s bodies. My blank slates as I called them, ready and waiting for me to help the individual express themselves. I’m fully tatted and pierced and I love myself the way I am and will not change that for anyone. I had tried my hand at love once before, but it didn’t turn out very well, so I gave up and concentrated on making my shop successful.

Choppy, confusing at times
Revisado: 02-09-20
I was excited about a female tattooist themed book and happy that the MC stuff was secondary to a degree, because I'm not really a fan of MC books. Ultimately, I was disappointed.
The story was fast moving, jumping ahead on story lines that made things hard to follow. I couldn't help feeling that I was missing key pieces of information. Between the pace & plot holes, I just couldn't get invested in any of the characters or their relationships because there was no natural development to grow with.
The threat to the main characters, which was a large focus of the book, was resolved in a very anticlimactic manner. My guess is that it's going to be detailed in the next book, but I'm okay not knowing.
I should have breezed through a 5+hour book. This took me an entire week. I was committed to doing a review, but it was painful to finish.
The narration was simply okay. I can't really fault the narrators, given the material they were working with. My second book hearing the female narrator & honestly, at some points I thought I was listening to the other book (character voices identical).

Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.
