I love stories of Hollywood and this was well researched and well-written. Even some of the scandals that I knew about were told in a refreshing manner. Each chapter revealed a lot of interesting facts that kept my attention. This is a captivating chronicle of the public image of stars and what went on behind the scenes to cover up the dirt or to fit a cookie cutter mold of audience and societal expectations, from the early days of cinema through the decades that followed.

I've been on a kick lately of reading film reviews by the masters Roger Ebert, Pauline Kael, Leonard Maltin, David Thomson, etc. and pop culture commentary, so this book of reviews caught my eye. I agreed with most of the writer's opinions, but even when I didn't I was impressed by his unabashed and engaged style of writing. He hooked me as a reader and it made me hunt down his other book of reviews. I listened to this as an audio book, so the only flaw is the choice of A.I. for the reader -- artificial intelligence has come a long way and at first I thought this was a human being doing the audio recording, but then the at-times-laughable mispronunciations made it clear that it was a machine. Overall, it didn't distract me too much since almost every audio book recording has some flaws, but I think a human reader would have served this book better.

Will Wheaton was a fantastic narrator. Randall is an excellent writer. I learned a lot from this, and loved the humor too. It also made me realize how dumb I am sometimes, especially when it comes to math. 😀
