Historia
Few bands have inspired as much devotion as the Chicago rock band Wilco, and it's thanks, in large part, to the band's singer, songwriter, and guiding light: Jeff Tweedy. But while his songs and music have been endlessly discussed and analyzed, Jeff has rarely talked so directly about himself, his life, and his artistic process.

Fantastic
Revisado: 01-08-22
OK, so I have to confess I'm from St. Louis and am therefore biased about all the great local history tucked into this book, musings over Mississippi Nights and the Landing, etc. Tweedy is a fantastic narrator and storyteller, with a lot of laughs and a few tears. My husband and I did this audiobook on a road trip and he is not even into Wilco and still loved it. I have recommended it to many.

Historia
There are few creative acts more mysterious and magical than writing a song. But what if the goal wasn't so mysterious and was actually achievable for anyone who wants to experience more magic and creativity in their life? That's something that anyone will be inspired to do after listening to Jeff Tweedy's How to Write One Song. Why one song? The idea of becoming a capital-S songwriter can seem daunting, but approached as a focused, self-contained event, the mystery and fear subsides, and songwriting becomes an exciting pursuit.

SO Great
Revisado: 01-08-22
This is an important book for any creative person, not just musicians. If you're into Uncle Tupelo and Wilco material, you won't be disappointed as you'll learn Tweedy's process and understand how his work developed. If you're not into UT and Wilco, you will still love it. I have recommended it even to my hardcore loving son! Tweedy is a great narrator and I have listened through this a few times and will likely revisit again.

I Listen to Dyer Over and Over
Revisado: 01-08-22
This is an essential collection. The Your Erroneous Zones is more of a recap of the book than reading through it, but that was Dyer's first book and it's clear that he matured a lot as a writer and spiritual teacher since then. I think of this as an update to those older, but still relevant, ideas. The other two books are essentials. Perhaps you have heard the ideas before in The Secret, etc., but I find to hear them in new ways and through new voices imprints them upon me more deeply.

Very Long But Fascinating All The Way Through
Revisado: 01-08-22
We listened to this on a road trip from St. Louis to Gulf Shores, AL, and back again and it happily filled the entire 24 hours! I've always been a fan of Will Smith, but I am so much more so after hearing this audiobook. He is a master at processing his pain and making something great out of what might turn another into a victim. There is magic in his story: how an abusive father could teach him to be funny; how drug dealers set him on his path; and so much more. He is so loving and forgiving and able to see the good in everyone. Will is also open about his immaturity and having too much power and success at too young of an age. I had not realized that he has been the number one rap star, TV star and movie star! Warning: we were traveling with an older couple who were not quite ready for the Ayahuasca bit at the end! Maybe not for company sensitive to drug use. Haha. But even that was handled more in the spiritual realm than the partying one.

Historia
Jon Fine spent nearly 30 years performing and recording with bands that played various forms of aggressive and challenging underground rock music. And, as he writes in this memoir, at no point were any of those bands "ever threatened, even distantly, by actual fame". Yet when members of his first band, Bitch Magnet, reunited after 21 years to tour Europe, Asia, and America, diehard longtime fans traveled from far and wide to attend those shows.

Well-Crafted, but No Story
Revisado: 09-11-20
Jon Fine's writing is great. There is no doubt about that. He has a voice and an originality with his words that are the thing that kept me going for the first six hours-plus of this book. But then I had to bail. There is just NO STORY. Nothing really happens, it is all musings on rock and the band culture of the 80s. I figure, if you invest six hours into a book and it's still not hooking you, it never will. Your Band Sucks is well-crafted, has a strong voice, and is great for a while, but it wasn't enough to sustain me and my husband on our road trip.

Historia
The women of the iconic '80s band the Go-Go’s will always be remembered as they appeared on the back of their debut record: sunny, smiling, each soaking in her own private bubble bath with chocolates and champagne. The photo is a perfect tribute to the fun, irreverent brand of pop music that the Go-Go’s created, but it also conceals the trials and secret demons that the group—and, in particular, Belinda Carlisle—struggled with.

Pretty Good with Some Surprises
Revisado: 09-11-20
I got interested in this memoir after hearing Kathy Valentine's audiobook, All I Ever Wanted, which was absolutely fantastic. Belinda Carlisle has an equally interesting story, but she isn't nearly the writer that Valentine is, and so, while it was pretty good, it didn't keep me riveted in the same way. But All I Ever Wanted is a pretty high bar to reach, and one of my favorite music memoirs of all time. Still, Belinda reveals much about how she grew up, what was going on in her mind before, during, and after the Go-Gos, and I was floored that such a squeaky-clean looking girl could have had such addiction problems. Kudos to her for finally beating them, and for her real-life Prince Charming, who stuck it out long after anyone else would have bailed. Lips Unsealed is a good book for a long drive, but it probably won't change your life. Look to Kathy Valentine's book to do that heavy work.

Historia
At 21, Kathy Valentine was at the Whisky in Los Angeles when she met a guitarist from a fledgling band called the Go-Go's - and the band needed a bassist. The Go-Go's became the first multi-platinum-selling, all-female band to play instruments themselves, write their own songs, and have a number one album. But for Valentine, the band's success was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream - but it's only part of her story. All I Ever Wanted traces the path that took her from her childhood in Texas - where she all but raised herself - to the height of rock n' roll stardom.

Loved This So Much!
Revisado: 07-25-20
I was a Go-Go's fan in the 1980s, like everyone else. Kathy Valentine was four years older than me and in listening to her story, holy sh*t! I can't believe all we have in common! The British mother, the drugs and alcohol, the sins of so many 70s era kids trying to make it on their own, hitchhiking, trying everything too young, and not being parented properly. I could not believe how much I related, except that Kathy had it a bit worse than me. I escaped the worst of it thanks in part to a kind boyfriend who took care of me, who I immediately wrote my gratitude to all these years later because this book moved me so.
This is so much more than a rock and roll story, although it is that. It is as fine a memoir as any other I've read, and I've read a lot. Kathy Valentine is a skilled storyteller with a biting wit and truth that cuts deep. And the musical interludes! I was so glad I did the Audible version and not the paper copy of the book because I wouldn't have heard all those cool tracks, crafted just for the book (I presume) and with a much hipper, more updated sound than the old Go-Go's. I can't recommend this enough and am telling all my friends.

Historia
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

I thought it was fantastic until....
Revisado: 07-25-20
If you read Love Warrior, you probably went in as a fan of Glennon Doyle's already, as I was. And am, sort of. I really enjoyed the first half of this book, even with the shock of learning that her last book's happily ever after ending wasn't even close. And then--wham! --the political stuff just kept coming! I want my spiritual books to be an escape from this overbearing world. I do not want to be lectured to, and put in a neat little category based on the current political climate. I absolutely appreciate and do not disagree with a lot of what Glennon Doyle says, but honestly, it just really bummed me out to have her go there, sounding like every single person on Facebook and TV, with her speeches that are way too world-focused and not in the spirituality that Love Warrior had. I probably won't be reading any more of Glennon Doyle because I don't like the vibe anymore.

One that I will listen to again and again
Revisado: 07-25-20
I first heard Matt Kahn a couple years ago, and I don't think I was ready for him then. But in this tumultuous year of 2020, I can't get enough of him. I think Matt Kahn speaks to those in a certain place of spiritual development, and so, he is not for everybody. But wow! This book gives all kinds of tools, healing mantras, and real-world advice on how to process hard emotions and situations to keep your vibration high and not get pulled into the lower realms, which so many empath-types like myself have a tendency to do. I can't recommend this book highly enough, and I am looking forward to doing the workshop book that works with this title next.

Arriving in the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo massacre, she found a Paris as traumatized by this unforeseen event as she had been by her divorce.

A Travelogue More Than A Spiritual Book
Revisado: 01-16-20
I've done a bunch of Sonia Choquette's audiobooks now, and this one is unlike the others. I found it really interesting just because I have never traveled to Paris and had these unique experiences. But if you're looking for Sonia's spiritual tips like in her other books, this is not the one. This is a sort of Eat Pray Love story of finding oneself after a failed marriage in another culture. It is entertaining and kept me going on a long road trip. I was both surprised and not surprised that her husband Patrick turned out to be a jerk. I never liked how he sounded in the meditations he did to close some of her other books. I'll chalk that up to intuition. Ha.
