Churchill's history of the Second World War is, and will remain, the definitive work. Lucid, dramatic, remarkable for its breadth and sweep and for its sense of personal involvement, it is universally acknowledged as a magnificent reconstruction.

A different POV
Revisado: 03-03-24
Author gives a different, eloquent, and engaging look inside the events of WW2. The author wasn’t entirely truthful at times, but his eloquence and innate storytelling ability makes up for any small factual inaccuracies.

Historia
He was called the Hangman of the Gestapo, the "butcher of Prague", with a reputation as a ruthlessly efficient killer. He was the head of the SS, and the Gestapo, second-in-command to Heinrich Himmler. His orders set in motion the Kristallnacht pogrom of 1938 and, as the lead planner of Hitler's Final Solution, he chaired the Wannsee Conference, at which details of the murder of millions of Jews across Nazi-occupied Europe were toasted with cognac.

Brilliant look behind the curtain of the Nazi state.
Revisado: 06-09-22
The author of this book does history a great service. She peels back the curtain on the Nazi state and reveals the inner workings of the Nazis terror state. Through the eyes of Frau Heydrich and other eyewitnesses, we the readers observe the moral corruption of the Nazi bigwigs. While I disagree with some of the conclusions in the epilogue concerning the fates of Heydrich’s children, this book does an excellent job breaking down how the most famous criminal in a government of criminals functioned.

In KL, Wachsmann fills this glaring gap in our understanding. He not only synthesizes a new generation of scholarly work, much of it untranslated and unknown outside of Germany, but also presents startling revelations, based on many years of archival research, about the functioning and scope of the camp system.

Very thorough breakdown
Revisado: 08-01-19
This book is the definitive history of the Concentration Camps. Best explanation as to why they happened, and is the most eloquent argument why everyone decent and moral reacts with outrage at sloppy holocaust comparisons and concentration camp comparisons.

Brilliant Biography of a supremely complicated man
Revisado: 10-04-17
Loved this bio! I’ve read hundreds of these type of books, but this one was a personal favorite! Lee has received a huge amount of negative press this last year, and this book illustrates the stupidity of most of the rabid criticism. Lee was far from perfect, but he was a supreme gentleman, a mighty warrior, and a noble soul. A product of his society, it would be unfair to him to judge him based on a moral standard that didn’t exist in his time.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 06-27-17
I purchased this book expecting a great story about a giant monster and the struggle to kill it. What I found was one of the greatest, and most emotionally complex stories I've ever read. By the end, I came to the inescapable conclusion that the villain/monster of the story is Frankenstein, not his creature. The creature is the victim. The victim of a creator so consumed with selfishness he abandoned his creation because of how the creation made him feel. Taken in proper context, the actions of the creature are understandable, but not excusable. There is always personal responsibility. But there is a modicum of understanding for the creature, abandoned to his fate by a cruel and selfish creator, who seeks vengeance on his creator for denying to the creature what he enjoys.

This landmark study was first published in English by the Naval Institute in 1955. Widely acknowledged for its valuable Japanese insights into the battle that turned the tide of war in the Pacific, the book has made a great impact on American readers over the years. Two Japanese naval aviators who participated in the operation provide an unsparing analysis of what caused Japan's staggering defeat.

Deeply Disturbing, yet instructional tale
Revisado: 06-09-17
If you are squeamish, I would not recommend this book. But for those history buffs and psychology enthusiasts who want to, this book is for you. A deeply disturbing, yet instructional tale, it dives into the mind of the greatest mass murderer in history. Most of the Nazi mass murderers didn't leave writings. But this one did. And it's a fascinating look at how one man rationalized his role in the murder of millions.

Historia
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the continent of Africa was a hotbed of international trade, colonialism, and political gamesmanship. So when World War I broke out, the European powers were forced to contend with each other not just in the bloody trenches - but in the treacherous jungle. And it was in that unforgiving land that General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck would make history.

A fantastic story about an unknown part of WW1
Revisado: 02-09-17
One of the most fascinating stories of World War One, the adventures of Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck as laid out on this book bring a smile to the face and even a tear or two to the eye. He was a skilled warrior, and deserves much more recognition from the world than he currently gets. If you love a good story, a complex campaign diary, or an emotional tale of an officers devotion to his men, this book is the one for you.

Historia
Five months after being deployed to Iraq, Lima Company's 1st Platoon became one of the first American forces to enter Fallujah, where they encountered some of the most intense hand-to-hand combat since World War II. Civilians were used as human shields or as bait to lure soldiers into buildings rigged with explosives; suicide bombers approached from every corner hoping to die and take Americans with them; radical insurgents, high on adrenaline, fought to the death.

A Modern Band of Brothers
Revisado: 02-06-17
The author takes the reader on an incredible journey into the bowels of on e of the most savage urban battles in the history of warfare. Along the way, we meet and become connected to young marines and their stories. As they are blown away one-by-one, we feel the pain of their loss. This book is a worth successor to Band of Brothers and I look forward to the TV show that should be made from this book.

As the author states at the end, in America every day is truly Veterans Day.
