Historia
Have you been too nice for too long? Have you tried to speak up for yourself, have better boundaries, or take care of your own needs, only to feel anxious, stuck, or guilty? The unfortunate truth is people-pleasing and excessive niceness are debilitating patterns that most people never truly change. They remain in this “cage of niceness” until their final days, when they experience a strong sense of regret for living a life that wasn’t truly their own.

Enjoyed it. The last several chapters don’t offer new or insightful information, but overall I’m glad I read it.

Historia
Systemic Shame is the socially engineered self-loathing that says we are solely to blame for our circumstances. It teaches that our consumption is moral and personal choice is our only tool of change. Systemic Shame tells us that poverty is remedied by hard-working people pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, that marginalized people are responsible for their own oppression, and that massive global crises like climate change can be solved by switching to paper straws. When we inevitably blame ourselves for failing to do enough to combat structural injustices, we feel Systemic Shame.

A bit repetitive, but has some insightful info.
Revisado: 08-11-24
Devon has lived a very unique life, which makes the book a bit more compelling seeing as how some of the information can feel very repetitive. I did struggle finishing it towards the end. However, I did find some nuggets of insightful information in the book though, and if you’re curious about the topic, I do encourage you to listen to it.

Not very insightful. Author is just regurgitating old ideas from other authors and it’s not very original.

Historia
A deeper look at an old-fashioned quality. We've all heard the phrase, "Patience is a virtue", and doubtless responded with a sigh, as usually it's spoken with a tone of reproach. But this virtue carries with it a wealth of wisdom that can actually help us find happiness in our day to day. Author Mary Jane Ryan details just what living with patience can bring to our lives and how it can change us for the better.

Historia
The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion - and a tyrannical one at that. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a ping-pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.

The storytelling could have been more polished. There was too much focus on medication.
Revisado: 12-31-19
I rarely write reviews but felt the need to write this one. Although there’s a few insightful things in this book, 70% of the book is spent on Russell telling you why drugs are important and what drugs you need to take to help with ADHD. Please keep in mind that as of 2018, Barkley is a paid consultant to Takeda pharmaceuticals. ( According to a YouTube video of him that you can find through typing his name on Wikipedia). The storytelling in this book needs a lot of polishing. The book should have been 2 hours at the most. The book title is misleading and should be changed to include how a huge portion of the book is about medication. Please do your research on Russell to make sure you agree with his teachings and personal values before you read the book. The only tips he offers are on Executive Functioning which there’s plenty of other books on that.

An in-depth look at the science that underlies meditation's effectiveness, this audiobook teaches listeners how to harness the power of the principle "Where attention goes, neural firing flows, and neural connection grows". Siegel reveals how developing a Wheel of Awareness practice to focus attention, open awareness, and cultivate kind intention can help you grow a healthier brain and reduce fear and anxiety in your life.
