Historia
Growing up in a ghastly orphanage run by an abusive matron, Nica coped in the only way she could—by retreating to her imagination, where she lived out fantastical stories, especially about the Tearsmith, the man who makes tears, a terrifying figure who forges all the fears that dwell in people’s hearts. When she’s finally taken in by an adoptive family at seventeen, Nica thinks she’s leaving the group home, its torments, and her prison of otherworldly tales behind her. That is, until Rigel—a young man raised from birth in the same dreadful orphanage—joins her new family.

far and away outshines the movie
Revisado: 11-22-24
I don't often imbibe a movie before reading the book, but this time a did. This book is absolutely gripping and so well performed. There's so much depth and nuance and it's just beautiful.

I really wasn't sure as the book started how I felt about a lockdown based novel, but it was absolutely exceptional. The focus was inclusive of the virus without focusing on it. I highly recommend this.

I should be used to book addiction by now
Revisado: 03-24-21
For me Cursed By Death started as a slow build - the first few chapters taking me a beat to adjust to the voices. But once I did, I was all in. The story gripped me by the throat and didn't let go. Melissa Marr often makes me wonder if she's okay, and this book was no different. The weird was extra weird. the adorable was endearing. And the ending had me cursing her name (in a good way!). I sincerely hope there will be more Graveminder in the future because this book blew far past any expectations I had.

somehow crime fiction has become by audio book go to, and this book really did not disappoint. Every plot twist was unanticipated and the reveal pacing was amazing. I especially loved the cadences of the narrator's and their ability to draw a person into the world the authors has created.

Historia
After receiving a lead from an unlikely source, Juliana, the mortician tasked with the bodies of victims of the "Carolina Creeper", the South’s most notorious serial killer in decades, sets off to New Orleans in search of Theresa Morris, an heiress and presumably the Creeper’s only surviving victim. Theresa now goes by “Tess” and is a shadow of her former heiress self. She’s also being pursued by famous novelist Michael, who sets his sights on Tess as the muse of his work-in-progress, oblivious to her former identity.

I can't stop saying OMG
Revisado: 07-23-20
Have you ever read a book, that is so twisted, yet so compelling, it makes you mildly worried for the author?
When Pretty Broken Things started, I wasn't sure about the first narrator. I'm unused to Southern accents; but in for a penny, in for a pound. Once the plot caught me, which was by the second chapter, I knew I was lost. There are beautiful moments in the deep darkness of this book, and its raw authenticity made me question everything I thought I understood about victimology, profiling, and serial killers. Before this, had anyone asked me my most disturbing, yet addicting, read, I would have said The Butterfly Garden. Now I know it has been surreptitiously dethroned by Pretty Broken Things.

Instead, the lake in the valley below her cottage seems to spark something dormant in her - a sensitivity, and a power of some sort. Animals are drawn to her, electricity shorts out when she's near, and strangest of all, she sees a new vision.

Revisado: 07-19-20
I wasn't impressed by The Winter Witch, but this one was as fantastic as The Witch's Daughter. This book was also the first one in the series I had seen an ad for, so I listened to the first two to get here, and I'm glad I finally got to devour it.
