This was awful
Revisado: 03-18-24
This started as a very meh introduction to CBT, but then it harped on various religions and it went downhill from there. The audiobook version from Audible was absolutely terrible.

Absolutely not the best for this topic
Revisado: 04-30-22
Can confirm: All 3 star reviews and below are completely accurate.
This could have been a great overview, but it wasn't. The automated voice from my bank's telephone banker could have done a better job at narration and been twice as informative. That's a very low bar. Find yourself a better book.

Somethings are not as they seem to bee...
Revisado: 03-07-22
No spoilers here. Others have written enough of them, so I won't add to the spoilers list.
This was my first read by Gregg Olsen, so I didn't quite know what to expect. It was available to me via Kindle Unlimited so I downloaded this book, along with the audiobook, and figured this was going to be one of those books that didn't need my full attention as I was milling about my home or winding down before bed. For me, this book served my purposes well.
At first, I thought this was going to be at least 90% predictable but ended up being more like 80%. In some places, the book reads like a short story by quick dialogue without being too rushed to get to the point. Though some might have found it "too slow" of a start, an avid reader should know that great stories starting with a slow burn are giving the reader a TON of foreshadowing. In this slow burn, the author did not disappoint!
I really like how the underlying theme of being the one to find out about some dark sad truths through other people was well woven into each other. It was really cool how the author chose a backdrop of commentary about how cult-like to-good-to-be-true followings can be (or bee?). That's what made a lot of the far fetched events more believable. The flashbacks and present times were well executed. It got confusing in some spots, but a quick skim or listening to the chapter again was enough to get me back on track. It wasn't that the writing was confusing, just something that happens when you're nodding off with an audiobook.
The story itself was 3 stars. However, if you listen to this book from Audible/Kindle Unlimited, Karen Peakes is more than just a narrator. She becomes the characters! If it weren't for her performance, I probably would have not listened to some of the chapters again. Her experience as an actress, especially a play actress, really shines through. If I could rate Karen Peakes separately from the book itself, I'd easily give her 5/5 stars!

Historia
Ellen Boehm, a single mom from St. Louis, Missouri, appeared devoted to her children. But in reality, she was unequipped for motherhood, financially strapped, and desperate. Within a year of each other, her sons, ages two and four, died mysteriously, and Boehm's eight-year-old daughter then suffered a near-fatal mishap when a hair dryer fell into the girl's bath. While neighbors wondered how Boehm remained so calm through it all, Det. Sgt. Joseph Burgoon of St. Louis Homicide had darker suspicions.

We get it, Mr Coston. You think she's ugly.

This case seems to be well researched. The timeline of events was easy to follow. However, as other reviews have mentioned, the body-shaming by the author is disturbingly obsessive. Not cool.
