Historia
When the body of a bookseller is discovered, collapsed in a pool of blood in his Bristolian bookshop, it is immediately clear that he has been murdered. What is unclear is how someone could have met such a violent end in this quiet, peaceful place. DS Cross is adept at dismissing red-herrings but a worrying development in his personal life has left him hopelessly distracted, leaving his usual means of deciphering evidence challenged.

George is near perfection!
Revisado: 02-08-25
I enjoyed the mix of murder mystery and personal family interaction that George dealt with in this book. I am hoping that the series continues for a very long time. All of the characters are wonderful and I hope to enjoy future adventures. I love this author style And the book did not disappoint in anyway. If you are a fan of George crosses prior adventures then this book should delight you on many levels. The only disappointment that I have is I know I will need to wait for the next adventure. I really enjoy the narrator. Wonderful performance!

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Too much story, not enough dialogue
Revisado: 11-20-22
I love John Grisham novels. I look forward to them. Unfortunately, this one has been more like a history lesson. The author tells you everything there is to know about his setting and his characters. You get background on the characters from way, way, back. You learn who their families are. You know where they came from. What you don’t actually get is a lot of dialogue or personal insight from the characters themselves. I got 3/4 of the way through this book and stopped. There were numerous events in the lives of these characters, but nothing that held it all together for me. As the book was entering a third incarnation, I decided to let it go for a while. There were some excellent characters in there, and a more detailed version of any of the stories with dialogue and different points of view might have been a lot of fun. The author writes such great dialogue, and normally creates such vivid characterization but this time the most vividly described thing in the book was the Biloxi strip. I will go back and finish it later but this will not be one that I will return to again, and again, like A Time To Kill or The King of Torts or Sycamore Row. The best story in the book for me so far involved the hurricane. That portion was interesting and you did get some dialogue. The performance of the book was excellent though.

I really enjoy this authors characters. She does a wonderful job of making them come to life. I also enjoyed the performance very much. The book starts out slowly and I must confess that the last few chapters are actually my favorite.

Half of a great story
Revisado: 10-30-21
I really enjoyed the character; Billy Summers and I enjoyed his present day adventures. There was one aspect of the story that took the form of a type of flashback that I could’ve done without. This portion of the story was a rehash of old topics in a way and rather predictable. The important events happened in present times and were really very entertaining and quite fascinating. I also enjoyed the secondary character who joins Billy’s adventure. Like with mini Stephen king novels there was a very entertaining nod to a prior story. All in all I enjoyed most of this. The flashback just didn’t really add anything to the novel in my opinion.

Not his best
Revisado: 10-30-21
I have to admit that I always like his courtroom dramas the most. While I like his lead character in this, there was another character in the story that I really just could not stand; Jerri. The character, whom I suspect we supposed to feel sympathy toward and possibly be rooting for, was just annoying. She was insistent and relentless. Possibly those were intentional characteristics considering what she was attempting but it did not make her likable. I felt she was intrusive and I’ll just didn’t find her reasoning believable. I felt that she had other avenues she could have pursued in order to solve her problem but instead she chose to burden people who weren’t experts in their field with her issues. I would give a better description but I don’t want this to be a spoiler review. The writing was excellent and the performance was wonderful but the character of Jerri pretty much spoiled it for me. There was also the fact that she was what is sometimes referred to as a Mary Sue. Even professionals failed to do what she was able to do. She wasn’t believable in my opinion. I felt sorry for the lead character because she had to deal with this woman.

Sequel?
Revisado: 02-09-21
I really enjoyed this book. It was a bit slow to start but once it got going it was excellent. I would love to listen to a sequel. *hint hint*. The characters were very entertaining and I particularly enjoyed Bach, President Duncan, and Augie. The book is filled with twists and turns and it held my interest to the last. Great work, gentleman! As i mentioned earlier, I hope there will be more.

Historia
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Small spoiler included
Revisado: 09-03-19
I don’t normally include spoilers but I wish I had know about this portion of the book before selecting it so I thought I should warn others that might find it difficult to read. It does not technically ruin the book if you know this.
The book contains very graphic animal violence involving the slaughter of hogs. There is a good portion of the book that mentions methods of slaughtering hogs, the smell of those involved in the job, and even the fear of the hogs themselves. I found it distressing to listen to those parts and had to fast forward them.
As to the main story itself, my favorite character was the lead detective. He was interesting and I liked his sensible, fair, nature. For the most part the other characters including the lead, Mr. Archer, were somewhat stereotypical.
The book reminded me of an old Sam Spade style novel but wasn’t nearly as interesting.
I enjoy a great many of this author’s other books and that was part of the reason I chose this one but I will probably avoid other books featuring the Archer character if any are written. The performance was very good but the story just didn’t hold my interest. I will continue to read or listen to this author’s books but just not the ones involving these characters.

Unnecessary Romance
Revisado: 09-04-18
This is a very compelling story and the historical aspects were very well done. I enjoyed the story involving the Tennessee Children’s Home scandal and all of the unique characters the author created to tell that story. That part of the story is a five star however the unnecessary romance between two of the characters is a waste of time. It brings nothing to the story and tends to read like a Danielle Steel novel. It took me out of the story and took time and attention away from the interesting part of the book. I wish the author had left that out.
The performance was very good o liked listening to this book. I just wish the author had left out the romantic fiction in favor of more details involving other people in the main part of the story.
