Historia
In The Power of Strangers, Joe Keohane sets out on a journey to discover what happens when we bridge the distance between us and people we don’t know. He learns that while we’re wired to sometimes fear, distrust, and even hate strangers, people and societies that have learned to connect with strangers benefit immensely.

Great Non-Fiction
Revisado: 03-17-24
My favorite thing about this book is that it is non-fiction but it’s not sterile. There’s humor and wit and inspiration while also containing facts. Very enjoyable!

Historia
Three low-income families have been given a handsome retainer to join Geraldine Borden for a day at her cliffside estate. All the parents must do to collect the rest of their money is allow their children to test out the revolutionary playground equipment Geraldine has been working on for decades. But there’s a reason the structures in the bowels of her gothic castle have taken so long to develop—they were never meant to see the light of day.

Just kinda cringey
Revisado: 07-12-23
I liked some of the characters but many of them felt extremely 2 dimensional. Reading through this the writing was reminiscent of an edgy 14 year old boy wanting to be shocking. And before someone says “well it had a warning that it wasn’t for people easily offended” that’s not what this is about. Some of the ways the author describes the children in this book made me uncomfortable as well as having scenes (although in flashback) featuring descriptive details about a child’s genitalia. The book contains incest, genital mutilation, torture porn, scat fetish, pedophilia amongst other themes. It also features long paragraphs describing a woman’s genitalia as a rotting hole, a festering gash, etc. reeks of misogyny. If you’re expecting a scary gory book featuring kids you also need to be prepared so hear a lot about other characters and their sexual interest in these children. The book also features a nazi… not really sure the point of that but okay. Overall a meh book.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Worth reading 100000%
Revisado: 05-17-23
This is a must read for everyone. Its got so many levels of emotion and hearing Jennette read it is even better. You can hear the emotions in her voice and she does good to have sad moments, funny moments and surreal moments. As someone with a similar childhood this book actually helped me realize a lot of ways I could change things and made me feel seen.
