Historia
When Aisling Conroy's boyfriend Jack is found in the freezing black waters of the river Corrib, the police tell her it was suicide. A surgical resident, she throws herself into study and work, trying to forget - until Jack's sister Maude shows up. Maude suspects foul play, and she is determined to prove it. Don’t waste your time.
Revisado: 02-14-25
Full confession- I listened to the entire book while mostly saying to myself, why? Characters are flat. I didn’t care about any of them because author made no attempt to give them any kind of personalities, especially the lead detective. And plot holes? Anyone who watches/listens to true crime would know there is no way arrests and charging is done on no evidence other than the word of someone else. This is a really bad book.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Couldn’t get into it
Revisado: 08-09-24
I don’t like historical fiction that reads like a modern story with modern sensibilities on the part of the characters that are then plopped into a historical time period. Not for me. It made this story unbelievable with a feminist protagonist set in late 1700’s. I couldn’t keep going after the first two hours.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Fabulous read!
Revisado: 07-15-24
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Characters were quirky, loving, complicated. Story meanders but ends up coming together. Narrator made the book come alive. His different accents made it seem so real.

Sequel not good.
Revisado: 09-09-22
I read The Midnight Man. It was not a great book in my opinion but it did keep my interest. Thought I’d try same author in this the second of the series. Don’t bother. It’s a hot mess. Holes in plot never explained. How/why did Samson get adopted? Why was Noah only looking for two of his sibs and not Samson as well? These are just examples. It reads like the author was in a hurry to crank out a second book.
Same narrator for both books, but couldn’t stand how she did Sarah’s voice in this one. Like a little girl. Totally unbelievable to have a police detective sound like a simpering child.

Couldn’t get past chapter 2. Narrator voice (sounds old) was jarring while trying to read part of young character. Plot boring. Gave up.

While it held my interest, by the end I still didn’t care about any of the characters. I finished it just to see how mysteries were resolved. Would tepidly recommend.

On a beautiful summer night in a charming English suburb, a young woman and her boyfriend disappear after partying at the massive country estate of a new college friend. One year later, a writer moves into a cottage on the edge of the woods that border the same estate. Historia
Growing up on the Navajo Indian Reservation, David Crow and his siblings idolized their dad. Tall, strong, smart, and brave, the self-taught Cherokee regaled his family with stories of his World War II feats. But as time passed, David discovered the other side of Thurston Crow, the ex-con with his own code of ethics that justified cruelty, violence, lies - even murder. A shrewd con artist with a genius IQ, Thurston intimidated David with beatings to coerce him into doing his criminal bidding. David's mom, too mentally ill to care for her children, couldn't protect him.

Not a fan
Revisado: 11-08-21
Listened to the entire book. Sometimes compelling, sometimes boring. Many characters were not fully explained. How could Mona be as horrible as she was with an education and come from an established respected family? More explanation needed. Abuse happens in all socio economic groups but what made her so awful? How on earth did that sociopath father keep women falling in love with him? What did they see in him? Not a word explaining this. The abuse was horrific and yet David called his dad nearly every day near the end of his life. Why? I don’t find that admirable. He made his son conceal a murder among other horrible things. I was left with way more questions after this read and it was very unsatisfying.

I just couldn’t do it.
Revisado: 05-04-21
I tried. I got through intolerable final 4 hours. It was too blithery and light for the context. It was sappy. I kept making myself listen expecting it to get better. Even the constant teasing to find out what happens wasn’t enough to keep me going. I found a review of the end and what I’d missed. After reading that I’m glad I saved myself 4 hours to do something more productive. I clearly was not impressed with this book.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Up until the final 4 hours, I couldn’t decide if I actually liked this book. But it started to all come together and although I’m not one that easily cries, I found myself crying buckets during the last 20 minutes. Beautiful story and one that I think will stay with me for a long time.
