Five Years Earlier: Henry Dunne knows three things: that agreeing to host this raucous house party was a terrible idea, that he absolutely cannot show up to his nursing shift tomorrow with a hangover, and that the beautiful redhead in the corner will be sleeping in his bed tonight.

long-winded
Revisado: 12-31-24
Not for me. Juvenile/trite , can't -say-I-love-you plot. Chance to relive years and avoid mistakes idea was good. Just too much of it. Audiobook could be 3 hours+ shorter. Good writing style, tho, for those who like this type of romance novel (not me). Narrator does fine job.

Historia
When Margaret and her husband Hal bought the large Victorian house on Hawthorn Street—for sale at a surprisingly reasonable price—they couldn’t believe they finally had a home of their own. Then they discovered the hauntings. Every September, the walls drip blood. The ghosts of former inhabitants appear, and all of them are terrified of something that lurks in the basement. Most people would flee. Margaret is not most people. Margaret is staying.

Laughably, relentlessly gory; needs editing
Revisado: 11-29-24
I finished this only because I'm stubborn and I was somewhat intrigued by linking behavior re a haunted house to spousal abuse. Ended up an unpleasant waste of time. I'm not sure what audience this appeals to. The main character is probably in her late 50's. but the never-ending graphic descriptions of gory ghosts and their various body fluids and slimy innards seem like something a teenage boy might consider "creepy." The stream of profanity just gets old. The whole thing was way too wordy with dull, repetitive stretches. The narrator is fine. The story wasn't.

Historia
In the summer of 1985, a brilliant young British DNA scientist Helena Greenwood is found murdered in her front garden in a quiet suburb in California. Exploitative, and ultimately goes nowhere
Revisado: 12-11-23
I found this "story" exploitative and distasteful. The author/narrator has fed off of the murder of another woman throughout her career. I got the feeling the author/narrator just went back to her earlier successful publication of a book on the murder and decided to dredge it up and go for a sensationalist angle that maybe she'd been wrong. It felt like the author/narrator took advantage of the murdered woman's dying father, pandered to criminals and choked up with tears all for the sake of contrived drama. Visiting the murdered woman's grave, choking up yet again, then pronouncing she [the author/narrator] wouldn't have voted to convict... and claiming to be "shocked" to hear herself uttering such a thing was the final, obnoxious straw. Earlier parts of the story were interesting and I hung in there until the end, hoping there was some concrete evidence to justify all her "re-thinking" of her previous analysis of the case. But no. And basic questions were left unasked: For example, someone left lots of cigarette butts at the murdered woman's house as they were apparently casing the place. Author/narrator asks the convicted rapist/murderer if he smoked. He says "no," so end of story. Author/narrator never asks anyone else if he smoked. Gee, think he might be lying? He certainly told many, documented and substantial lies, including under oath. Maybe she was just a sucker with every motivation to want to believe the convicted rapist/murderer's lies. Or maybe she just decided to slant her storytelling in favor of the convicted guy because it let her write yet another book/podcast on the back of another woman's murder. And in the end, there's no shocking new evidence or resolution beyond the author/narrator's profession that now she has "reasonable doubt." Anyway, read/listen to the podcast if you want, but take everything this author/narrator says with a huge grain of salt because it sure feels like it's the reader/listener who's being played. There are plenty of other cases of proven wrongful conviction that make for better reading.

An original horror story(!) with no gore
Revisado: 12-09-23
I'm a fan of horror, but the genre can get stale and so many are cookie cutter stories with minor variations (the haunted house, possession, etc.). I kind of expected a generic haunted house story, but I was pleasantly surprised by interesting and original concepts. Supernatural horror with plenty of chills, but no gore. Although incorporating some familiar themes, there are unexpected twists and combinations. I docked it a star just because there is a huge question left hanging, but then again, it's the sort of story where you just have to accept the premise and go with it. The narrator did an excellent job. Bravo.

Solid horror, no gore
Revisado: 11-30-23
I really enjoyed this for the most part. Creepy concept to good effect. I like when horror is a fictional (supernatural) expression of real human fears/anxieties/trauma. I saw the end coming fairly early on, but it still worked.

Absurd plot with a more absurd ending. I finished this only bcz I was desperate for sometto listen to... and a little curious if the author could write their way out of the out-there premise. I was left feeling like I'd been a sucker for a catchy hook. Disappointing.

I got this on a whim as an Audible freebie. Wow. Well-told, well-acted, unusual. Dark suspense builds from this start. As soon as I finished, I looked for anything else by this author, but found nothing. So tired of disappointing audiobooks. More of this, please, Audible!
