voice actor was great, but just a bad book honestly. the plot line sucks, the powers are uninspired and the whole thing is just a mess

obviously an engaging plot and well written but if I'm being honest, the voice actors skill definitely took this from an interesting read to edge of my seat. I can see myself struggling to get through some of the cornier or more cliche parts if I were reading the book but the way the actors put so much emotion into the scenes I couldn't help but be equally engaged in them. well done👏👏👏

God damn Sanderson knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. I was biting my nails for the whole book

Little slow in the beginning. hard to see where the plot is going but well written, well narrated and picks up fast enough that it kept my interest throughout the book

first off, the narrator is fantastic.

as for the story itself, I will give Brent Weeks his credit, the story was engaging and interesting enough for me to read the whole thing and be interested. I did also personally enjoy the way in which it was told as a sort of memoir of Kylar.

that being said, fuck I hated this story. there was never a point where we see Kylar be Kylar, maybe there was supposed to be more damage than we thought done to him after the end of book 3 or maybe this is actually the story of a completely shattered and broken man whose entire personality is hubris but really this kind of just felt like a way to kill off Kylar without actually killing him because of the kakari(spelling?) plot armor. and the story ended up being 30 hours of Kylar failing EVERY SINGLE FUCKING THING HE TRIED TO DO. I mean fuck even if he is a shattered broken husk of a man he's still the apprentice of Durzo Blint and isn't some idiot. he was just running off half cocked (and acknowledged this in the book by saying Durzo would kill him or the like if he found out he didn't have a plan) and every time it happens he's like "I'm the night angel, OOGA BOOGA I can do anything" over and over again. as if he's incapable of learning a lesson or learning from failure, which is surprising as if he hadn't learned from his failures, Durzo would have killed him in by like chapter 5 of the first book. 🙄🙄🙄

anyway, kudos to Brent Weeks for writing a story that I hated and making it interesting enough that I still finished it, that is an accomplishment in and of itself. to anyone reading this review it is an interesting read, but, spoiler, the plot can be summarized as "Kylar is not the avatar of justice, he's the avatar of hubris, and he gets fucked up for 30 ish hours straight" just don't be looking for a happy ending. if ya want to read a book about the MC getting their shit wrecked and not learning a single lesson the whole time or if you just hate Kylar and want to see him go through Dante's inferno, give it a read. if you're looking for awesome assassin wet boy badassery, stick to the first 3 books

fun read and cool concept. I felt like the last book or two were struggling for content. they seamed to rinse and repeat the same plot line over and over which got tiresome. there is a twist that I did see coming a mile away which kinda sucked. the ending was good but most of the last two books could have been cut out and still made a great story.

definitely a refreshing twist on the lid RPG genre but it started out a little slow for me. I wished there was a more interesting like power mechanic. but the ending was enticing enough that I'm probably going to at least buy the second book before deciding if I want to continue reading a series or not
