I've listened (or more accurately, tried to listen) to over a dozen books about female alcoholics. I always quit listening by the time I reach the half-way mark, as I find them dull or too self-indlgent on the author's part. This is the first book on the topic that I have found inspiring. There were so many small pearls of wisdom laced throughout, that I have actually remained sober for two weeks now! The book wasn't preachy, wasn't boring, and most importantly, wasn't full of victimhood. It was just an intelligent, straight-forward telling of one woman's experience. Bottom line: I loved it.

This was a truly excellent rendition of a very capable woman's slide into the abyss (i.e., hell). I am so grateful to Ms. Vargas for having put aside her fears in order to share her life in this manner. Doing so has allowed her to serve as a guide of sorts, as to how one might go about escaping their own version of hell. I found the book to be empowering. I greatly appreciated the absence of a victim mentality. In the book, Ms. Vargas neither made excuses for her behavior, nor sought sympathy for her condition. Rather than wallowing in "poor me" or presenting excuses for relapses, she seems to conclude
that ultimately, it is up to the alcoholic to decide whether they will (a) take care of their disease, or (b) continue to make excuses for not taking care of their disease. I found this matter-of-fact acceptance of responsibility--not for having the disease, but for treating it--both refreshing and inspirational. Thank you. Ms. Elizabeth.

The story was somewhat interesting. It did, however, become a lot less so when the author diagnoses the ex-husband as a sociopath. I definitely could have done without this section, as it made the author seem sophomoric. Excuse me? You're surprised that a gorgeous bartender from a latino culture was unfaithful? Regardless of the fact that the author came across as very unsophisticated and somewhat entitled, the book was entertaining.
