Historia
Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.

Should be required reading for all Christians
Revisado: 07-23-21
Barr’s use of her own personal experiences, biblical knowledge, and historical expertise makes the book compelling while being relatable. She is clearly a woman with great faith who knows that God calls all people to serve and that service is regardless of man-made patriarchy.

Historia
It may come as a surprise to many people, but Japan is the most running-obsessed country on Earth. A 135-mile relay race, or ekiden, is the country's biggest annual sporting event. Thousands of professional runners compete for corporate teams in some of the most competitive races in the world. The legendary "marathon monks" run a thousand marathons in a thousand days to reach spiritual enlightenment. Yet so much of Japan's running culture remains a mystery to the outside world, on par with many of the unique aspects of contemporary Japan.

Fantastic book, interesting subject

I really liked the content of this book. There was a bit too much about the trials of his travel, but everything about the running was fantastic. Great narration!

They say Paris is always a good idea.... You know what I say? Paris would be a much better idea if I spoke the dang language. I can't even board the metro to visit the Louvre without ending up at the Moulin Rouge, and let's not even mention how I'll ever make it through a day at my new office. Fortunately my company hooks me up with my own personal translator. Ooh la la. Or should I say bloody hell? Because he's charming, witty, and British, and he brings the city to life for me.

Boring and predictable
Revisado: 02-11-21
I listened to it. I love Richard Armitage’s voice, usually. But he sounds so bored reading this book. It’s probably because it’s a boring book. Grace Grant did a great job, though.

First half is good, second half is so boring
Revisado: 02-10-21
The first half is great! I love the long distance relationship that evolves. I love that the main character struggles with mourning and that at the end the author explains the mental disorder that she has. But the part of the book that deals with his touring and fame is completely unnecessary and uninteresting.
Honestly, the book should have ended at chapter 30. I listened through the second half thinking something was going to happen. But nothing really happened. It was just one long, boring obstacle to their happily ever after. It could have been done in one chapter. Even the epilog was boring.
The narration was good. I just don't like different narrators reading different dialog. i.e. Sloan should only be one voice, Jason should only be one voice. Like a full-cast approach which is probably too expensive to produce for books like this.
I would definitely recommend this book since it's in the "Plus Catalog" right now, but just for the first half. I wouldn't buy it ala cart. I'll probably read the first half again.

Historia
This riveting narrative explores the lives of six remarkable female pharaohs, from Hatshepsut to Cleopatra - women who ruled with real power - and shines a piercing light on our own perceptions of women in power today. Female rulers are a rare phenomenon - but thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, women reigned supreme. But throughout human history, women in positions of power were more often used as political pawns in a male-dominated society. What was so special about ancient Egypt that provided women this kind of access to the highest political office?

Historically necessary, yet relevant for today
Revisado: 01-30-21
My personal love for Egyptian woman pharaohs led me to read the book. Kara methodically goes through each woman’s dynasty to set up her circumstances, then generously summarizes her impact on her contemporaries and future dynasties.
It was the constant thread of linking female traits throughout history that makes it relevant to today. I really enjoyed listening to it and will seek out more by Kara and read by Kara. She’s a great narrator!

Historia
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.... As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is.

It is so charming and pure in its story about love after WWII.
Revisado: 01-16-21
Through a series of letters between several friends, the story is told of a strong young woman looking for her purpose after the success of a book she wrote and is trying to write another one. Her story of self discovery weaves through a discovery of the story of Guernsey during WWII by interviewing and befriending a small literary club who are more like a family. It’s so lovely and sweetly romantic.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Angels and saints. Catholics tend to think of them as different from the rest of us. They're cast in plaster or simpering on a holy card, performing miracles with superhero strength, or playing a harp in highest heaven.
Yet they are very near to us in every way. In this lively audiobook, Scott Hahn dispels the false notions and urban legends people use to keep the saints at a safe distance. The truth is that Jesus Christ has united heaven and earth in a close communion. Drawing deeply from Scripture, Dr. Hahn shows that the hosts of heaven surround the earthly Church as a "great cloud of witnesses".

Revisado: 07-20-20
As always, this Scott Hahn book is very well structured and read. Of course I would have wanted him to mention the life stories of a couple of my favorite saints. But who he chose was perfect for the message of the book: we are a sister/brotherhood among the saints. I will definitely read this one again!

Historia
Of all things Catholic, there is nothing that is so familiar as the Mass. With its unchanging prayers, the Mass fits Catholics like their favorite clothes. Yet most Catholics sitting in the pews on Sundays fail to see the powerful supernatural drama that enfolds them. Pope John Paul II described the Mass as "Heaven on Earth," explaining that what "we celebrate on Earth is a mysterious participation in the heavenly liturgy."
