Historia
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

I've listened to ancient history books and ancient mythology but this just wasn't for me. It was all over the place and not as insightful as I had hoped.

Historia
The 10 enlightening (and often humorous) lectures of Medieval Myths and Mysteries will show you how far from the “dark” times of legend these centuries were. Uncover the facts about the Knights Templar. Reveal the truth behind the tales of legendary creatures like the Questing Beast and the unicorn. Trace the events of the Black Death and the ways it altered the world in its wake, and much more. With Professor Armstrong, you will dig deep into the ways that later generations reshaped the narrative of the medieval years and perpetuated the myths.

The speaker had a good voice and told stories and educated. The last lecture was my favorite, I wasn't expecting it at all.

I guess if you have nothing but time . . .
Revisado: 04-14-21
I struggled to finish this but I did because it was on of my boyfriend's favorites. I am reconsidering our relationship now. The plot was great, I'm super jazzed about someday visiting the real "clock of the long now". But the author just must be an overly verbose person. The book could've been a third of the length if you took out all the boring dialogues and unnecessary tangents. That amount of detail is best saved for a movie series where you don't have to put every scene detail into words. I will never read another book by this person. I recommend anyone who actually has a life outside of audiobooks to just read the cliff notes or hope they make a movie.

Revisado: 01-22-20
The plot was touching, but this book just dragged on and on. Literally I can't tell you how many times I just wanted to give up and read the Wikipedia page to find out the end. I will never get into another book by this author. I found the 5mins she spent describing the most unimportant parts of the setting in each chapter quite exhausting.

Kind of "full of it".
Revisado: 10-15-19
I am an ecologist that works in a similar forest ecosystem in North America. For me this book stretched a lot of facts and over dramatized everything. It was really tough for me finish. I almost didn't but I wanted to see if there was anything redeeming. I guess if you have no connection with a real forest this book isn't such a bad place to start getting an understanding. But the author is a little full of himself and his overly idealistic management. I also couldn't stand the way he overly romanticized every little aspect. This book was really annoying to me and I LOVE trees.

What was I thinking . . .
Revisado: 05-21-19
I naively thought they were going to actually TELL us the stories, not just give us the philosophical and anthropological interpretations of the stories. The lectures basically just gave a very brief overview of each myth, it was frustrating and disappointing. This was a really long course and it was made even longer by the fact that I had to stop each chapter and go search out the full tale online before continuing. A lot of their commentary was redundant and could've been replaced with more details about the story in question. I would recommend the subject matter but I wouldn't recommend this title unless you already well versed in the stories in it. Once again: very disappointed.

This wasn't what I was expecting. This is basically more of a breakdown of etymology rather than a history lesson. There's just way too much boring drawn-out explanations of the meanings behind words.

Historia
By now, the low-carb diet's refrain is a familiar one: "Bread is bad for you. Fat doesn't matter. Carbs are the real reason you can't lose weight. In The Low-Carb Fraud, longtime leader in the nutritional science field T. Colin Campbell outlines where and how the low-carb proponents get it wrong: Where the belief came from that carbohydrates are bad and why it persists despite all the evidence to the contrary. The foods we misleadingly refer to as "carbs" aren't all created equal, and treating them that way has major consequences for our nutritional well-being.

Is it too late to get my money back?
Revisado: 05-16-18
I recently started the keto diet, which is a low-carb diet. I was blown away how successfully I have been losing weight over the past few weeks. But when something seems too good to be true, it usually is. so I decided to try to read up on the downsides of low-carb diets. This book had surprisingly high ratings, I guess there's a lot of dumb people out there. I got that the author is a very well distinguished person in his field but this book was nothing but a persuasive argument. He pretty much spent the first two chapters just trash talking some Tobbs guy that I've never even heard of. All the author did was just try to defend himself from what tabs said in his book and discredit his work with some casual information. As a scientist myself I guess I was looking for an understanding of how our metabolism works and what actually happens to your body when you are on a low-carb diet. I quit this book after the first two chapters because I gleaned absolutely nothing from it. And it's really hard to believe the author when he tells you based on his research that low-carb diets don't work when you are living proof that they do. But just because of low carb diet works doesn't mean it's healthy. I think this guy was too busy trying to defend his life's work that was apparently criticized by someone else to actually give us some facts to work with. he came off as incredibly egotistical and childish. This book was definitely a complete and total waste of time and money in my pursuit of knowledge of how my metabolism works.

Boring AF.
Revisado: 03-27-18
Some people should just not narrate their own audiobooks. This guy does not have the voice for it. I found his voice be quite irritating.
On top of that, the author is incredibly verbose. It's not like there weren't some insightful things in this book but each chapter is so drawn out. I'm not going to lie I didn't make it past the third chapter I just couldn't do it anymore. I listen to audiobooks every morning along my hour commute for the past 5 years (almost all nonfiction books). This is definitely one of the few books I just had to quit in the middle because it just was boring me to death.

A blueprint. A bible. What Sun Tzu’s Art of War was to ancient China, Pimp is to the streets. As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Iceberg Slim’s life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. It is a trip through hell by the one man who lived to tell the tale—the dangers of jail, addiction, and death that are still all too familiar for today’s Black community. By telling the story of one man’s struggles and triumphs in an underground world, Pimp shows us the game doesn’t change; it just has a different swagger.

Surprisingly good.
Revisado: 03-06-18
The first 90% of the book was really difficult to make it through sometimes. There's a lot of graphic detail about terrible things. I feel like it reminded me of an episode of Game of Thrones where everybody you get attached to gets killed off. But it does have a good point to it. I would also recommend listening to the glossary first so you don't have to spend the first five chapters trying to figure out what he's talking about.
