Historia
In this intimate and open account—nothing like any rock-and-roll memoir you’ve ever read—Alex Van Halen shares his personal story of family, friendship, music and brotherly love in a remarkable tribute to his beloved brother and band mate. In his rough yet sweet voice, Alex recounts the brothers’ childhood, first in the Netherlands and then in working class Pasadena, California, with an itinerant musician father and a very proper Indonesian-born mother.

Like Any Working Man
Revisado: 12-12-24
I love how Alex sounds like any working man as he told these stories. What an epic story we heard many of the anecdotes before. It’s great to hear them from Alex’s point of view. It’s a great tribute to his brotherhood. What a loss for us all. What a loss for Alex. Thank you to Alex for sharing this story and your grief.

Great Insights for So Many Fields
Revisado: 10-06-24
I found this book while looking for material on system engineering. This title is so insightful about so many other fields. These include economics, politics and environmentalism. It’s about looking at everything in life and everything in the world. The material is top-notch. And so is the narration. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone.

Historia
By the early 1960s, Ford Motor Company, built to bring automobile transportation to the masses, was falling behind. Baby boomers were taking to the roads in droves, looking for speed not safety, style not comfort, and Ford didn’t offer what these young drivers wanted. Meanwhile, Enzo Ferrari lorded over the European racing scene, crafting beautiful, fast sports cars that epitomized style.

Historia
Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith’s canonical book on political science turned conventional wisdom on its head. They started from a single assertion: leaders do whatever keeps them in power. They don’t care about the “national interest”—or even their subjects—unless they must. Newly updated to reflect the global rise of authoritarianism, this clever and accessible book illustrates how leaders amass and retain power. As Bueno de Mesquita and Smith show, democracy is essentially just a convenient fiction.

Historia
It's a story of the 1970s. Of a road trip in a wood-paneled station wagon, with the kids in the way-back, singing along to the Steve Miller Band. Brothers waking up early on Saturday mornings for five consecutive hours of cartoons and advertising jingles that they'll be humming all day. A father - one of 3M's greatest and last eight-track-salesman fathers - traveling across the country on the brand-new Boeing 747, providing for his family but wanting nothing more than to get home.

Great Book Great Oratio
Revisado: 06-20-23
I loved listening to this book. Like Skippy, another reviewer, said this is a great Gen X time capsule. What really strikes me is how this is really poetry. The author weaves, jingles and sayings from the time period into a really good prose.

Historia
Picking up where he left off in his acclaimed memoir Sting-Ray Afternoons, Steve Rushin brilliantly captures a bygone era, and the thrills of new adulthood in the early 80s. It begins in Bloomington, Minnesota, with a 13-year-old kid staging his own author photo that he hopes will someday grace the cover of a book jacket. And it ends at a desk in the legendary Time & Life building, with that same boy - now in his early 20s and writing professionally - reflecting on how the hell he got there from what seems like a distant universe.

Super Awesome
Revisado: 03-30-23
I haven’t enjoyed an audiobook this much in a long time. I’ve been skipping podcasts to finish this. I loved the nostalgic trip through the eighties at Marquette University. I loved the embarrassing honesty. Mister Rushin sure has ways with words.

Historia
Who was Kim Philby? Those closest to him—like his fellow MI6 officer and best friend since childhood, Nicholas Elliot, and the CIA’s head of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton—knew him as a loyal confidant and an unshakeable patriot. Philby was a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union. Together with Elliott and Angleton he stood on the front lines of the Cold War, holding Communism at bay. But he was secretly betraying them both: He was working for the Russians the entire time.

Historia
In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a Black African father and a White American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a Black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father - a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man - has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey - first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family.

It’s an insight into Obama. You might not agree with all the policy directions. But you have to understand his humanness. We have a messy mixed up world. But it is one world.
