Historia
From July 10, 1943, the date of the Allied landing in Sicily, to May 8, 1945, when victory in Europe was declared - the entire time it took to liberate Europe - no regiment saw more action, and no single platoon, company, or battalion endured worse, than the ones commanded by Felix Sparks, who had entered the war as a greenhorn second lieutenant of the 157th "Eager for Duty" Infantry Regiment of the 45th "Thunderbird" Division. Sparks and his fellow Thunderbirds fought longest and hardest to defeat Hitler.

Another stunner from Kershaw
Revisado: 09-27-17
Like other books from Kershaw, the story takes off slowly but I have come to realize why Kershaw does this; the foundation for his books must stand on firmly researched foundations. Gradually the life of Felix Sparks develops into one that cannot be forgotten; a man of compassion , courage and integrity. I am not an American, but surely Americans should regard Felix Sparks as one of their greatest. Thank-you General Sparks, thank-you to the brave men he commanded, thank-you United States and thank-you Alex Kershaw for bringing this great man to our attention. Fred Sanders gives an excellent performance; my only reservation was his rendition of foreign tongues.

Revisado: 09-22-17
Simon Winchester is surely, a national treasure. A learned man, a great author and a wonderful performer. Having read "The professor and the mad man", " The Pacific" and now "The meaning of everything", I have become a steadfast fan. What a polymath (ha... the definition awaits you!) and inspiration for those of us who aspire to the same, only for the mere love of it. Thank-you Mr Winchester!

Historia
The leafy Avenue de Foch, one of the most exclusive residential streets in Nazi-occupied France, was Paris' hotbed of daring spies, murderous secret police, amoral informers, and Vichy collaborators. So when American physician Sumner Jackson, who lived with his wife and young son, Phillip, at Number 11, found himself drawn into the Liberation network of the French resistance, he knew the stakes were impossibly high.

Another stunner by Alex Kershaw
Revisado: 09-19-17
This book starts off at a rather leasurly manner, leading one to false assumptions as to what is to follow. Fear not, the true and gut wrenching story of a French+
-American family, the French resistance and the evil empire follows apace. One becomes riveted to whatever pose one adopts, heart in throat, knowing but not knowing the eventual outcome. I immediately invested in another Kershaw book! Mark Deakins performs masterfully.

Historia
Hailed as “a master storyteller” ( Booklist), Alex Kershaw routinely climbs best-seller lists with his narrative histories. In the waning months of World War II, SS Colonel Adolf Eichmann sent over half a million Hungarians to their deaths at Auschwitz. But one Jewish ghetto remained, and only one man - a Swedish diplomat named Raoul Wallenberg - could stop Eichmann.

STUNNING
Revisado: 09-13-17
An education about one of the lesser known tragedies of the second world war. Most have heard of Adolph Eichmann but few, I would venture, know how he went toe to toe with Raoul Wallenberg in his attempts to rid Budapest of Jews. What a sad commentary of humankind and the faint- hearted majority; those who stand by while tragedy befalls others. A celebration of the courage of the few but a general indictment of the pathetic, malleable majority.
Brilliantly told. An excellent performance by George Guidall.

Historia
In this remarkable WWII story by New York Times best-selling author John R. Bruning, a renegade American pilot fights against all odds to rescue his family - imprisoned by the Japanese - and revolutionizes modern warfare along the way. From the knife fights and smuggling runs of his youth to his fiery days as a pioneering naval aviator, Paul Irving "Pappy" Gunn played by his own set of rules and always survived on his wits and fists. But when he fell for a conservative Southern belle, her love transformed him from a wild and reckless airman to a cunning entrepreneur.

Struggled to finish it...
Revisado: 09-10-17
My impression of this book differs radically from most others.
This is a remarkable story, about a remarkable man……. written in remarkably dry, dragging prose. This, to me, was rather like sitting in a lecture, being inundated by tedious detail. Despite a profound interest in aviation and the second world war, the book turned into a task to be completed, the author's style disguising a story otherwise engrossing. Audible’s reviews are mostly favorable so the question arises: I am one of the few who sees the emperor has no clothes? In support of my impression an extract Kirkus reviews reads as follows:
“... Bruning’s writing is workmanlike but never really smooth, and he sometimes neglects the larger context.”
Sorry, can't keep this one on my virtual bookshelf.

A century ago, outsiders saw China as a place where nothing ever changes. Today, the country has become one of the most dynamic regions on earth. In Oracle Bones, Peter Hessler explores the human side of China's transformation, viewing modern-day China and its growing links to the Western world through the lives of a handful of ordinary people.

Life is far too short for this..
Revisado: 09-03-17
A few readers remark on the poor narration of this book. I disagree; the narration is fine, it is the story that drags. Even the most personal events (such as the romance between Nancy and Willy) are written in such a dry, analytical manner as to make one glance at the time, wondering when the author's prose will take on some life. This obviously comes from the pen of a correspondent, not an entrancing, complex author. I am aa analytic scientist by training, my books must transport me elsewhere, even when dealing with non-fiction. This one fails in doing so.

Historia
In 1941, when she was turned into an armed merchant cruiser, the SS Benbecula was already old. Yet even she was needed to protect the vital Atlantic sea lanes. Commander Lindsay, her new captain, had to work desperately to mould the ship’s company - raw recruits and old-timers - into a fighting force. And better than anyone, Lindsay knew this could be his last command, his last chance.

A stressful, frenetic reading!
Revisado: 08-31-17
I could not get beyond the first chapter. The reader over-acted, rushing from one sentence to another, frentetic, hardly giving the listener a chance to breath. This may well have resulted in an unfair assesment of the book but I will never know; one can only take so much auditory punishment....

The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a Black African father and a White American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a Black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father - a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man - has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey - first to a small town in Kansas, and then to Kenya....

Now we know what fashioned the values of this unique politician. This man has experienced the life of the non-priveliged, first hand. Barack Obama has experienced tough times and discrimination that the rich white in America cannot ever relate to; the antithesis of Donald Trump. He was able see the needs of the working class and turned to help them directly. This book explains why.
