Funny but falls a bit short
Revisado: 05-01-25
It’s a fun premise, but it should maybe be a short story. There is not enough meat to the tale.

Historia
The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror. Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society. Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the air—and Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagaësia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untraveled.

Not a good comeback
Revisado: 01-15-24
This books is not a fitting successor to the inheritance cycle. There were problems with the flow. The book felt very repetitive and you could see how some characters were just card board cut outs of a person, brought in only to provide some thin context or a chance for the author to place (one more) obstacles in front of Murtagh. The torture focus was disturbing and offered nothing new other than forcing the reader to linger on Murtagh’s pain. I loved this character, and very little of that affection transferred to the husk of a man that plodded along in this story. It is not that Murtagh needed to be triumphant or unscathed. It is that how his hurts, shortcomings and challenges were not portrayed with care or sympathy.
I am not sure I will return to this world after this!

Jonathan Forest should never have hired Sam. It was a sentimental decision, and Jonathan didn't get where he is by following his heart. Determined to set things right, Jonathan orders Sam down to London for a difficult talk…only for a panicking Sam to trip, bump his head, and maybe accidentally imply he doesn't remember anything?

Historia
A funny and heart-warming coming-of-age story, set in a rural Australian community, about 17-year-old Jackson finding the courage to explore who he is, even if it scares him. 'I don't paint so much anymore,' I say, looking to my feet. 'Oh. Well, I got a boy who needs to do some art. You can help him out,' Aunty Pam says, like I have no say in the matter, like she didn't hear what I just said about not painting so much anymore. 'Jackson, this is Tomas. He's living with me for a little while.'

This is a beautiful book written with lots of care and joy, while not minimizing the struggle that people can face when they grow up in marginalized communities. Loved it!

Ambrose wakes up on the Coordinated Endeavor with no memory of a launch. There’s more that doesn’t add up: evidence indicates strangers have been on board, the ship’s operating system is voiced by his mother, and his handsome, brooding shipmate has barricaded himself away. But nothing will stop Ambrose from making his mission succeed—not when he’s rescuing his own sister.

Save yourself the tired trite!
Revisado: 06-26-23
I embarked on this whole series a while back and deeply regret it. Any charm from the first book long evaporated in the repetitive, boring and utterly proselytizing tone of the later volumes. Getting through the last one was difficult. I mean no disrespect to people’s religious beliefs, but this books is a badly wrapped advert for female subjugation. Casting the incredibly powerful women only as victims of jealousy, power hunger and utterly unable to attain meaning as anything other than a reflection of a man’s regard. It is just such a shame that an interesting story with a cool magic system devolved into a retelling of the role of Eve in bringing in sin, and the “goodness” of an all knowing creator that teaches us through blood and suffering that we are blessed. Don’t get the book! Save yourself the agony…

Historia
In Boyfriend Material, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to fall in love, fell in love for real, dealt with heartbreak and disappointment and family and friends...and somehow figured out a way to make it work. Now it seems like everyone around them is getting married, and Luc's feeling the social pressure to propose. But it'll take more than four weddings, a funeral, and a bowl full of special curry to get these two from "I don't know what I'm doing" to "I do". Good thing Oliver is such perfect Husband Material.

Faltered a bit but got there in the end!
Revisado: 11-30-22
Another fantastic work by Alexis Hall!! They brought an incredible energy to this book and made it a beautiful journey through the life of a young couple in-love, rather than falling in love! The boom falters a bit at the very beginning, struggling maybe to find the charcters’ voice, but then really pulls together!

Zach is 18. He is bright and articulate. He's also an alcoholic and in rehab instead of high school, but he doesn't remember how he got there. He's not sure he wants to remember. Something bad must have happened. Something really, really bad. Remembering sucks and being alive—well, what's up with that?

Beautiful!
Revisado: 04-13-22
If you have come across Benjamin Alire Saenz’ work before you will recognize the themes that he uses in this novel. However, this piece of work is raw with emotion and it is very dark. It was hard to listen and heartbreaking throughout. It was also beautiful.
