Historia
For years, while Iran and North Korea kept Western diplomats busy, China and Russia have been quietly seeding the US with spies and soldiers. Now, a silent army of occupation lurks inside US borders, and for America, it is already too late. When the assault begins—via an EMP strike that disables the US electrical grid and neutralizes her defenses all in one fell swoop—the US is caught completely unprepared. The nation is lost, and it is up to ordinary citizens to defend their cities, towns, neighborhoods, or even just their families.

Complete lack of US military knowledge
Revisado: 03-06-24
I picked this up because I saw a review comparing it to Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy. A better comparison would be to the 2012 remake of Red Dawn.
The novel drags on with unnecessarily during the first 40 or so chapters. The entire premise is that nearly the entire US military is completely inept and rolls over to a first strike by China, Russia, the Iranians, and North Korea. Later in the book, a group of Marines decide to give tactical command during combat to a Navy astronaut that was formerly a pilot. What a joke.

A secret buried in the Antarctic. A puzzle unsolved for thousands of years. And a Brooklyn-born master gunnery sergeant who's royally pissed that he has to babysit the researchers sent to figure it all out. But when Patrick "Wic" Finnegan finally sees what the team has uncovered, he can't believe his eyes, nor is he prepared for the violence to come. Soon, the portal opens and unleashes a storm of unbridled fury upon humanity.

Basically Expedition Force, but on Earth
Revisado: 02-17-23
So, it starts out kind of questionable, but not bad. I raised an eyebrow at a SEAL on liberty running around with a SAW, an M79, and loads of ammo in his trunk, but when the protagonist runs across the alien gun, he becomes a total moron and it's blatantly a rip off of Expedition Force. Just annoying banter between an alien AI and a stupid human.

Worst book in the series

I'm not sure if it was the content or the narrator, but the main character sounded basically like a child throwing a temper tantrum.

Narrator could not keep character voices consistent. It got confusing when in a single dialog the main character had 4 different accents.

Historia
United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

Heavy downward spiral
Revisado: 10-16-18
This book was, in my opinion, the worst in the series. Craig Alanson's lack of military knowledge continues to be more and more apparent. Joe seems to lose intelligence every chapter and the back abd forth with Skippy gets monotonous. I enjoyed the first book, but I keep expecting the characters to act more like competent military professionals and less like idiots and it's not happening.

Join the Army and See the Universe. That is the motto of The Third Space War, also known as The First Interstellar War, but most commonly as The Bug War. In one of Robert Heinlein's most controversial best sellers, a recruit of the future goes through the toughest boot camp in the universe - and into battle with the Terrain Mobile Infantry against mankind's most alarming enemy.

Amazing book, Poor Reading
Revisado: 08-13-18
Starship Troopers is a great book. I read it while I was in the Marine Corps and it should be required reading for all service members in my opinion. I picked this up to fill in a gap between book releases and get a little nostalgia. I was unimpressed with the presentation. He does not have the voice for the tone of the book in my opinion. Additionally, there are two or three sentence sections throughout the book that are clearly recorded at a different time and with substandard recording equipment. I think this might be sections of to fill in the primary recording being the abridged version. Overall, great book, but the presentation really takes away from the experience.

Historia
January 1864: General Robert E. Lee faces defeat. The Army of Northern Virginia is ragged and ill-equipped. Gettysburg has broken the back of the Confederacy and decimated its manpower. Then, Andries Rhoodie, a strange man with an unplaceable accent, approaches Lee with an extraordinary offer. Rhoodie demonstrates an amazing rifle: its rate of fire is incredible, its lethal efficiency breathtaking - and Rhoodie guarantees unlimited quantities to the Confederates. The name of the weapon is the AK-47.

Amazing book, the narrator is not so great
Revisado: 04-22-17
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator has a speech problem with words that end in S. He whistles at the end of every S word. It's extremely annoying until you just start to tone it out, or maybe he stops doing it.

Horrible recording and narrator
Revisado: 10-24-16
The recording is horrible. Clearly a poor analog recording. Sounds like the narrator is talking through a hallway at the mic. In addition the narrator is incredibly monotone with no expression or life in his voice. This is one of my favorite Clancy books and thus guy completely ruins it.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Great Book, Excellent Performances, Inconsistent
Revisado: 06-16-16
Did the narrators do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
The main issue I had was that the narrators for different characters was constantly changing. The Baron Harkonen had at least 2 different narrators. The Duke Leto, Stilgar, and several other characters all had the same issues. This made it difficult to keep up with the conversations when they would transition between scenes despite the same conversation continuing.
