Deeply and profoundly beautiful and honest.
Revisado: 12-04-21
Sinead says in her book something along the lines of: If you want to know me, listen to my music. I have always known this to be true. There have been some dark times in my life when her music has saved me.
This book is her story. It is the map of her life filled with beauty, horror, joy, sorrow, love, loss, a whole lot of self realization and a massive quantity of humor to boot, the life that evoked the gorgeous music that we know and love. Sinead reads her own book with a voice that is so human, so heartbreaking and so hopeful.
This is one of the most beautiful memoirs I have ever read.
...and PS. Prince is a d*ck! (you'll know what I mean when you get there).

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Disappointing.
Revisado: 01-27-20
I have been a HUGE fan of Atwood for more than 25 years. Half my life. I have consumed every book she has ever written. She has a way of writing that is visceral... In the past when I have read her work, I could taste smell and see her descriptive prose. "The Handmaids Tale" rocked my world as a 21 year old feminist. I have NOT watched the television series and was saddened that a generation of young women have missed out on the nuances and subtleties that you can really only draw from reading a book (or listening to an audiobook) when the writing is so excellent.
You can imagine how excited I was when I heard that she was coming out with a sequel. So excited that I even pre-ordered it.
"The Testaments" wasn't bad. It just wasn't great, it wasn't even good. I've read Atwood books for which I haven't considered the content to be great... but that was always overridden by the gorgeousness of the way she weaves words together. This was not so with this book.
With the popularity of "The Handmaids Tale" Hulu series, I wonder how much pressure was put on her to squeeze out more material so that Hulu could cash in. I also wondered how much the editors of "The Testaments" pushed her to "dumb down" the content to appeal more to a mass market.
Perhaps sometimes a masterpiece should just be left as is. The power and the message was all right there in "The Handmaids Tale" and didn't need to be added to.
If you want to read an example of the perfection of Atwood's incredible writing beyond "The Handmaids Tale", I recommend reading "Oryx and Crake" and the the other two books in that series. Profoundly gorgeous writing with a powerful underlaying message.

Mildly entertaining, but didn't knock my socks off
Revisado: 11-14-19
I found that this book was a fun dabble in mythology but somehow the story always teetered on the surface of events. I found that it didn't get to the heart of the characters. I wanted to care about the characters... to empathize with the protagonist. It just didn't seem to take me there.

I tried to like it....
Revisado: 09-04-19
I found this book to be very dry until about the last hour or two... where it suddenly heats up and in fact becomes quite gruesome. I kept hoping that it was going to hook me earlier... so kept listening. I felt like the book was too focused on weaving the twists and lost site of really allowing us to get to the heart of the characters... and therefore, I just didn't care.

If I could give this book six stars in every category I would. I would also recommend listening to this book as an audiobook as opposed to the paper version. It only makes sense when you consider that Amanda Palmer is a performer... so guess what you get in the audiobook that you don't get with paper?... Performance.

Historia
When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction, and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

Historia
King has tenderly staked out a territory for his wife and three daughters, Grace, Lia, and Sky. He has lain the barbed wire; he has anchored the buoys in the water; he has marked out a clear message: Do not enter. Or viewed from another angle: Not safe to leave. Here women are protected from the chaos and violence of men on the mainland. The cult-like rituals and therapies they endure fortify them from the spreading toxicity of a degrading world. But when their father, the only man they've ever seen, disappears, they retreat further inward until the day two men and a boy wash ashore.

Revisado: 02-07-19
I wouldn't say don't listen... but then again I wouldn't say do... it is a quirky and bizarre story. A bit confusing in the beginning... but stick in there and you'll start to figure it all out. If weird is what the author was going for, she attained it. It's hard to say really what I felt about this book.. I didn't love it... but I found it curious.

Historia
From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees, a magnificent novel about two unforgettable American women. Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world - and it is now the newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

This beautiful story was exquisitely read... The characters were captivating, the story engaging and I really loved the historical element of these early feminists. A beautiful narrative revealing an early example of how the fight for equality for both race and gender are closely woven.

I was so enthralled with Middlesex which in my mind is a perfect book/audiobook. I don’t love this one as much as Middlesex, but it comes very close. I look forward to another book from this author.
