Wow, this was a long audio book. It took me a long time to get it finished. Not sure I would have stuck with it as a printed read. I'm listening to more audio books lately and loving it. The story is of a little girl named Leisel who steals books in war torn Germany. In all it was a compelling story and the author did a good job depicting the images of what happened. Some of it was repetitive thought. Also, I grew weary of hearing the word 'sowmench' (sp). It seems they called each other that often. If you like stories of this era, you'll like this. The narrator was okay. He had a good accent, but it wasn't my favorite thing. The story is sad & heart-wrenching. Now I need to read something more uplifting. All in all a soul-searching story.

Loved the entire book. A very emotional story. The characters were very real & well portrayed. The only complaint I had is the way it ended. We became so invested in the love story only to be left short of the completion of their reunion. I wanted a bit more. Excellent narrators, however!

The advantage of having the author narrate the book is that the voice inflections are spot on. Ruth Squire is a rebellious young lady in the dangerous times of 1929 in Detroit, Michigan. Ruth wants to explore the world, her parents want her married. Secrets and lies cause young Ruth to grow up quickly and the unexpected attraction to the chosen bridegroom cause even more complications. If historical fiction is what you crave, this is an excellent choice.

A Winter's Tale is a lyrical masterpiece. It's how a book should be written. The prose is beautiful and activates the readers imagination. Helprin takes you on a journey you can actually feel. It's one of those books I could read over and over again. I actually saw the movie, as well. I wish I hadn't. The movie did not do the book justice. The audio book was much better than the movie! If you like New York, if you like travelling in time, you will fall in love with this book.

Although this is certainly a wonderful account of Cleopatra's life, you probably have to be an avid history lover to get through it. This book goes into great detail and sometimes makes it a little harder to pay attention. The narration was wonderful, though. I am a great history buff, so I enjoyed it to the end, but I can see where if the reader was looking for an electric story, they might be disappointed. If you love accurate historical events as pertains to the character, you will like this book. Stacy Schiff put a lot of research in this story and Robin Miles did a wonderful narration.

What made the experience of listening to The End of the Affair the most enjoyable?

Colin Firth's voice and talent in interpreting the story, Not sure I would have enjoyed the print version as much. Colin's voice did it!

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I'm not a fan of the 'pat' happy ending, so I didn't mind this ending.

What does Colin Firth bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Colin makes it a movie in your head. You can 'see' the characters. Wouldn't have gotten that from the book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you are looking for a nice long story with an excellent narrator, this is the book. I loved the narration and the attention to detail. I am a history buff, so this was right down my alley. I love any and all things connected to Catherine the Great. The narration brought the story to life without bogging you down in boring details.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite Character was Catherine, of course. She was an incredible woman who had incredible patience and endurance.

What about Mark Deakins’s performance did you like?

Everything! He was perfect for this story and did the accents perfectly. The pronunciation of each name in Russian, French, etc was wonderful.
