Historia
In this irresistibly imagined belowstairs answer to Pride and Prejudice, the servants take center stage. Sarah, the orphaned housemaid, spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household. But there is just as much romance, heartbreak, and intrigue downstairs at Longbourn as there is upstairs. When a mysterious new footman arrives, the orderly realm of the servants’ hall threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, upended.

Excellent narrator, Austen fans beware
Revisado: 11-20-23
Emma Fielding is a spectacular audiobook narrator and any disappointments about the text do not reflect her excellent performance.
The thing that is most to be enjoyed about a book like this is the fun of swimming around the periphery of a beloved and familiar story and seeing it from a fresh perspective. It brings new insights and understanding in both a charming and entertaining way. The danger of a book like this is that it can upheave and disrupt certain characters, relationships, ideas, and understandings that one may hold onto in frustrating and disappointing ways.
For me this book did both.
Certain familiar characters became more beloved, meanwhile others were in a sense “ruined” with these new revelations. New characters added dimension and meaning, while others seemed completely out of place and inconsistent with what we already had.
My biggest disappointment with this novel was the adult content that appeared. For example, when the central love story finally jumped off, the two characters become “connected” by immediately beginning to have sex. During flashbacks, there are more graphic descriptions of sexual encounters, along with extremely vulgar language. This is not what is expected when visiting part of Jane Austen’s world and/or the regency era.
I truly enjoyed the author’s writing style, again I found walking on the outside of Pride and Prejudice really interesting (enjoyable and fun at times!). That being said, in my personal opinion, quite a few additions and plot points were disappointing and unnecessary to the world/story. Additionally, due to certain unexpected adult content, this book is not fit for certain age groups that may want to read it due to its connection to Austen’s classic.

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

The world saw Carlos Pena and Alexa Vega enjoying the success of their acting careers--Carlos on Nickelodeon's Big Time Rush and Alexa in the Spy Kids movies. But what they didn't see was the question both Carlos and Alexa were asking in the midst of all that fame and fortune: What's the point of it all anyway?

Points to Jesus
Revisado: 12-03-22
This audiobook was a whim purchase. While some chapters and issues these two discussed were more relatable, compelling, or powerful than others, they do one thing very well… point themselves and their readers back to Christ and His love. I was most moved and inspired by Alexa’s story and her faith. The audiobook aspect was very fun as both authors are engaging storytellers.

Since The Karate Kid first crane-kicked its way into the pop culture stratosphere in June 1984, there hasn’t been a week Ralph Macchio hasn’t heard friendly shouts of “Wax on, wax off” or “Sweep the leg!” Now, with Macchio reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso in the number one ranked Netflix show Cobra Kai, he is finally ready to look back at this classic movie and give the fans something they’ve long craved.

Sincere, Earnest, A Winning Memoir
Revisado: 10-25-22
I pre-ordered this audiobook as soon as I heard it was coming out!
I loved every minute of this. I laughed, I gasped, I teared up and was deeply moved by Macchio’s sincerity and earnestness. I have always loved “The Karate Kid” films and am still thoroughly enjoying the “Cobra Kai” series on Netflix. Macchio gives a glimpse behind for curtain for these and more, but stays loyal to what fans know and love. All the while he humbly accepts and embraces how important the characters and stories are to so many people across generations.
If I could give higher than 5 stars, this one would win it.

After the War I and her service as a nurse, Maisie hangs out her shingle back at home: M. DOBBS, TRADE AND PERSONAL INVESTIGATIONS. But her very first assignment soon reveals a much deeper, darker web of secrets, which will force Maisie to revisit the horrors of the Great War and the love she left behind.

For fans of Downton Abbey
Revisado: 07-31-22
If you love upstairs/downstairs stories (like Downton Abbey) or World War 1 memoirs/historic fiction (such as Vera Brittain’s “Testament of Youth” or Michael Morpurgo’s “War Horse”), Maisie Dobbs’ tale is a charming addition to your reading pile.
Part hero origin, part coming-of-age story. A commentary on social classes, education, opportunity, self-discovery and the consequences of war. All the while carrying a heartfelt romance of trial and tragedy, Maisie’s opening of a new “detective agency” is actually the least important aspect of the book.
I listened to the audiobook version (free with AudiblePlus) and the narrator had a lovely singing voice that she was able to showcase multiple times in the story. I look forward to visiting Maisie and her gang again in the future.

Horridly Fascinating Premise!
Revisado: 07-31-22
A one day read after a student recommended it as their favorite book. Everybody loves a good hidden dystopia YA, right?
This first in it’s trilogy, this novel feels a bit like an overly long prologue. I kept waiting to get to the bigger conflict and reveal (and it did come… eventually). That being said the story is an interesting one with intriguing characters, very personal conflict, and a concept that seems both horrid and fascinating at the same time (flaying tattooed skin into books when loved ones die). One of my favorite aspects of the book is how traditional fairytales and myths were adapted into a history and world building within novel. Familiar enough to get you excited, but adjusted in a way that keeps you guessing about how it impacts the world and conflict within the story.
I’m not in a rush to read the next one, but I’m definitely interested in returning sometime in the not too distant future to find out what will happen next.

Historia
In one of his most enlightening works, C. S. Lewis shares his ruminations on both the form and the meaning of selected psalms. In the introduction he explains, "I write for the unlearned about things in which I am unlearned myself." Consequently, he takes on a tone of thoughtful collegiality as he writes on one of the Bible's most elusive books.

Goal: Reread Psalms
Revisado: 07-31-22
This book will require a reread for me because there were definitely portions that went totally over my head. I love when the Bible is explored as a Jewish book written firstly for a Jewish audience. It brings to light so many aspects I am not practiced in recognizing. After that look, we can explore how it relates to a resurrected Jesus and believers who have received the Holy Spirit. Lewis gives many detailed analogies and explanations of deeply theological ideas.
My goal is to reread the Psalms and revisit this book.

Analogies & Practical Explanations
Revisado: 07-31-22
“As long as your own personality is what you are bothering about, you are not going to Him at all. The very first step is to try to forget about the self all together. Your real new self, which is Christ’s, and also yours, and yours just because it is His, will not come as long as you are looking for it. It will come when you are looking for Him.”
Ch. 11 - The New Men
I finished and felt I needed to start again. So much goodness for my personal faith walk. The chapter on forgiveness was transformational. I had never experienced the truth of forgiveness like it is presented in this book. Many analogies and practical explanations that make a being a Christian so much more tangible. Looking forward to rereading!
