Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Murderbot is the best
Revisado: 04-17-25
There are these cyborgs entities out there - SecUnits (Security Units) - that are little more than their programming. They’re designed to kill and contracted to different parties at different times. Then there Murderbot. It’s contracted to a group of surveyors on an alien world. Things go wrong almost immediately and it takes some time before they deduce that it’s not an accident.
There is another group of surveyors, a larger one with more SecUnits, that goes quiet. That requires investigation and it’s not pretty. Murderbot takes an unusual interest in the survival of its employers (or the group that works for a corporation). It makes a big difference.
While the story is overtly about the dangers, the real theme is: What does it mean to be human? What I can say is that Murderbot is given the opportunity to figure it out for itself. That’s a journey that I’m sure will be woven throughout the series. We don’t know who is behind the attacks and that’s also something to be explored.
This is a short story meant to be a hook for the series. I recommend reading/listening to it.

Historia
Andrew Brawley was supposed to die that night, just like the rest of his family. Now he lives in the hospital, serving food in the cafeteria, hanging out with the nurses, sleeping in a forgotten supply closet. Drew blends in to near invisibility, hiding from his past, his guilt, and those who are trying to find him. His only solace is in the world of the superhero he's created - Patient F. Then, one night, Rusty is wheeled into the ER, half his body burned by hateful classmates.

Powerfully emotional
Revisado: 04-16-25
This was a freebie in Audible but it would have been worth paying for.
Drew and Lexi and Trevor were great friends, all stuck in a hospital with two of them dying. Drew liked to make them feel better, even breaking hospital rules to make that happen. Then along came Rusty. Burned, a victim of hate. A friendship grew and maybe more.
This was an emotional story on so many levels. Lots of laughter and crying. When I hear “I wanted to feel on the outside what I did on the inside” it resonated with me so much. That was me at one time.
Not everyone’s fate was something I expected. That made it better for me. Predictable isn’t necessarily bad but I won’t turn down a nice curveball. I can say I absolutely adored this story on every level. It’s been a while since I’ve given a 5 star review but this one touched me deeply.

Paranormal Teen Romance
Revisado: 04-14-25
I usually don’t like paranormal romances. They tend to have thin plots around gratuitous sex. This being a YA story I knew there would be no sex. The plot was well thought out.
The haunting of Hugo’s house makes use of the genre perfectly without being wholly derivative. It didn’t need to reinvent the reasons for hauntings, or how to stop them, because the story was primarily built around the cast with the haunting being the thing that binds Hugo and Cameron together.
So why not 5 stars? I felt like anything and everything that could be resolved was resolved. It left no opportunity for growth of some characters should there ever be a second book. I nevertheless highly recommend it.

Historia
The Yellowstone super-eruption has put an end to modern civilization. As cities and countries continue to fall, the colony of Rivendell in the alternate Earth known as Outland looks more and more like the only real hope for humanity. But life in Rivendell isn’t getting any simpler, either. Bill and Kevin continue to discover new worlds; the population continues to rise; winter is approaching; and everyone has their own opinion about how things should be run.

Not the sequel I would have expected
Revisado: 04-09-25
It should have been “the world is over, thankfully we found this place” to “we’ve got portals so our options have increased”. The idea of post-apocalypse is gone.
There is strife, which is to be expected, but the resolutions have something to do with portals. There’s a whole world out there to exile people to but they just ignore it.
I don’t know what the plan was for this book other than that there’s clearly more to come. It’s free so listen but don’t set your expectations high.

Very bizarre perspective
Revisado: 04-08-25
The is told from the perspective of a cat trying to get her human to find love. That’s odd enough but the narration is terrible. Throwing in random purrs while speaking or drawing out the r’s made it hard to listen to. I can’t recommend it.

Historia
Stetson Major and Curtis Traynor are about as opposite as two cowboys can get. Stetson is a rancher, tied to the land he loves in Taos, New Mexico, while Curtis is a rodeo cowboy whose wanderlust never could be tamed. But now Stetson's momma is dying of Alzheimer's, and she can't remember that Curtis hasn't been Stetson's boyfriend for a long time. Curtis's absence makes her cry, so Stetson swallows his pride and calls his ex-lover. To Curtis, Stetson is the one who got away, the love of his life. And Momma is his friend, so he's happy to help out. Yet returning to the ranch stirs up all sorts of feelings that, while buried, never really went away.

Kind of dull
Revisado: 03-22-25
They’re in love. Then they refuse to do anything at all that would keep them together. Years later they meet again and suddenly decide they can do everything they wouldn’t do before. Also, this story was not marked as having mature themes.

Narrators were awesome
Revisado: 03-16-25
The whole concept was a good one. I loved the idea of having to fight to be heard when everyone doubts. The problem was the ending. The story isn’t what we thought and it’s sad.
The narrators were great. They speak like people do rather than rereading a book. Awesome job.

Another great adventure
Revisado: 03-16-25
The boys are at it again. They head off to a foreign land but the trip is tougher than expected. Much tougher. They may have been betrayed but that’s inconclusive. An expected and usual ally helps save the day.
There was a lot of tension in this story. I knew things would work out in the end but getting there was nerve wracking at times. That just shows how good Flewelling is at her craft. They have their hopes and fears and doubts, largely due to a less than noble person in their company.
I was less enthusiastic about the narrator, though perhaps it’s because he’s not the same one as in all the prior books.

I never thought I'd go to college a virgin, but unless something changes—and fast—that's what's going to happen. In comes Harden Hart, my all-American boy-next-door best friend with an offer to help in a way I'd never imagined. The boy, who turned everything he touched to gold, had a filthy side to him I'd never seen. Oh, and did I mention he's straight?

Friends to Lovers
Revisado: 02-26-25
It was okay. Loved the voice acting but Vance’s doubting himself, and so everything everyone said to him, got annoying. Still, the relationship was solid and it was blindingly obvious how Hardin felt about Vance from the very beginning. I can say I telegraphed how the fathers of each would react to the relationship but it wouldn’t surprise me if this sort of thing played out exactly the same in the real world.
It was a little more graphic in the sex area than I usually like but the story itself made up for it.
