One of Cardinal Ratzinger's most important and widely read books, this volume is a revised second edition with an improved translation and an in-depth preface by the Cardinal. As he states in the preface, since this book was first published over 30 years ago, many changes and significant events have occurred in the world, and in the Church. But even so, he says he is firmly convinced that his fundamental approach in this book is still very timely and crucial for the spiritual needs of modern man.

great book poorly narrated

I can’t recommend this book enough if you wish to dive deeper into the meaning and history of the faith. I, like many modern Christians, found myself resting upon a sort of superficiality in my faith in Christ, and Ratzinger provides layers upon layers of depth, which I found to strengthen not only my belief, but my awe in God. He may have been the Pope of the Catholic Church, but by all means, the book is for the entirety of the Christian Church.

Burnham is an Oracle

Burnham gives a comprehensive answer to what so many conservatives already know in their hearts to be true. Liberalism is a disease of the West, and we approach its terminal phase. What Burnham observes as early as 1964, has taken mainstream conservatism up until 2022 to figure out, many of whom still haven’t, and I highly recommend this book to you if you fall into this camp. Even if you don’t, or you’re a devout liberal yourself, I think you will find Burnham gives a rational and compelling alternative perspective to contemporary liberalism. So much of modern discourse is tied into empty platitude, but every platitude has its origin, and I have yet to read anyone else who has been able to articulate the essence of traditional American conservatism so well. It’s as if he was granted a window into the future through his knowledge of the past — notably of the Enlightenment illusions — which is the critique that brought me here in the first place and is so rarely found today.

I’ve never heard or read a writer with such a knack for choosing the most graceful, elegant, and proper words and phrases as C.S. Lewis in both of these books. The concepts discussed are incredibly dense but his metaphors and analogies make it all very digestible. There is maybe no greater description to date of the timeless, spiritual battle that rages in the hearts of each and every one of us.
