Historia
At age four, Phyllis Biffle Elmore was plucked off her front porch in Detroit and dropped on her grandmother Lula Horn's doorstep in rural Alabama. Phyllis felt utterly abandoned until Grandma Lula showed her both all-encompassing love and her intricate "Quilts of Souls." Phyllis listened intently as Lula told epic stories of folks who had passed on as she turned their clothing into breathtaking quilts for their families.

Epic Storytelling
Revisado: 02-21-25
As a Mississippi resident myself, Elmore’s stories touched my soul. As a professional working with young impoverished teens, the author’s family dynamic provided clarity and context for my child clients. As an American, the fact that the author is still very much with us in modern times serves as a reminder that the old south is not as distantly historical as we like to imagine.

Historia
In Evicted, Princeton sociologist and MacArthur “Genius” Matthew Desmond follows eight families in Milwaukee as they each struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Hailed as “wrenching and revelatory” (The Nation), “vivid and unsettling” (New York Review of Books), Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of twenty-first-century America’s most devastating problems. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.

Powerful Work
Revisado: 06-01-17
As someone who works with the indigent population in the poorest state in this nation, listening to this book has opened my eyes to the daily struggles of my clients. Housing is an issue so fundamental to daily life and also something so unacknowledged by the average American, I truly believe every human being should read this book to gain a more human perspective on this nation's impoverished population.
