Great story coupled with a stunning performance = a fantastic read!
Revisado: 11-10-23
This was a great read overall. It started a little slow, but after a bit, I couldn’t put it down! The author is great at keeping the audience hooked, and there were plenty of good little twists and turns to keep things interesting. The narrator really sold the story, reading with enthusiasm skill, making the characters come alive in the process. I would definitely recommend this for a shorter read, and I definitely look forward to the next book in the series. If you’re looking for fantastical romance, this is your book.

Historia
My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Despite awkward writing, story is amazing
Revisado: 08-08-18
First off, Nick Podehl is my new favorite narrator. He REALLY brings the characters to life and each has a unique sound, male or female. To be fair, there are many more spoken men in the book, but he does each superbly.
The story is great. After listening to the first book, Name of the Wind, I told myself I wouldn't bother with the second because of how it was awkwardly written, and frankly, a bit amateur. The amount of adverbs alone would make the most forgiving reader question if this was a professionally edited. If I read another line that says "his/her lips made a thin line," I'm going to lose it. However, the story itself is very good and very interesting. The Name of the Wind was captivating enough that I put up with the terrible writing to know how the story turns out. Nick Podehl alleviates some of the writing issues with his charismatic narration which helps the whole situation and really improved the experience (TL;DR: If Mr. Podehl had not been the one narrating, I would have given up on the first book). Listen to the first 5 chapters of this one. If you aren't hooked by then, you probably won't be.

Historia
Andrea Vernon always thought she would spend her life living in Paris writing thought-provoking historical novels all day and sipping wine on the Seine all night. But the reality is she's drowning in debt, has no prospects, and is forced to move back to Queens, where her parents remind her daily that they are very interested in grandchildren. Then, one morning, she is kidnapped, interviewed, and hired as an administrative assistant by the Corporation for UltraHuman Protection. Superheroes for hire, using their powers for good. What could possibly go wrong?

A Normal Life in an Abnormal World

Story is slow to start, but ultimately rewarding
Revisado: 08-07-18
Overall good story and a decent performance by Bahni Turpin. While her female voices were done fairly well and had distinct differences, her male voices were one of three: either rough/gruff touch-man type, timid/shy guy, or squeaking and scratching, high-pitched nails-on-a-chalkboard annoying.
The story is a bit slow and I really didn't know what the story was trying to be about. But after several chapters, things got rolling and it was a good time and the end *mostly* pays off. I would recommend this book in the end.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Great story held back by pervasive strong language
Revisado: 04-15-18
What made the experience of listening to Artemis the most enjoyable?
Rosario Dawson is an amazing voice performer. She made the characters come alive in a way I've never heard in an audiobook where the person simply reads the story. Rosario acted out all the parts well and while a few characters with entirely different nationalities sounded suspiciously the same, the overall effort was great.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Artemis?
I'm a huge sci-fi nerd so hearing the intricate details of the moon colony was great. Enjoyed the descriptions of the city and it's life. I would say one of the most memorable moments would be the harvester sabotage.
Which scene was your favorite?
Any scene with Jazz and Svoboda. They had great chemistry and I laughed several times listening to their exchanges.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I could have, absolutely! I listened to it on my way to work and several occasions I was almost late because I was sitting in my car listening, never wanting to leave!
Any additional comments?
The story, characters, and plot were great in this book. However, the excessive, pervasive language throughout was surprising and disappointing. If an author cannot find better ways to convey dialogue besides swearing then maybe there's a larger, overarching problem. There are SO many different ways to convey a message than to use swearing. It sounded like a crutch to be used when he didn't know how else to write. Is she really stressed? Have her swear! Is she in trouble? Have her swear! Is she excited? Have her swear! It just got really old. I cannot recommend this book to ANY friends because of the pervasive language through out (probably over 100 uses of the f-word alone). Its too bad because this book was excellent in every other way.
