Degrading to women
Revisado: 03-17-25
I have only read one other Ken Follett book and it was years ago. My memory was that he was a good writer. I found this particular book to be an excuse to write smutty dirty desciptions of men using women, one in particular for their purpose and pleasure. The woman's pleasure was of little or no consequence . It is an excuse for a dirty old man to write a dirty book. I thought he was a better writer than that. Apparently not.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-04-25
I was excited when this book came out because there was so much positive press. I respect the fact that Percival Everett is an accomplished and educated writer with a great deal of experience and success. This book had glimmers of it's original historical cousin, Huckelberry Finn, but for me really didn't finish with the same memorable characters or adventures. So much of the book was the reiteration of the lyrics of familiar old southern songs. I grew up in KENTUCKY which is not the deep south but most of these songs were familiar to me. Verse after verse of the songs are played (Audible). Ol Dan Tucker etc, etc, etc. The book itself is not very long at all. I kept waiting for it to lift off and for me, it just didn't. There is, to be fair, some development of the friendship of the boys and some of the kinds of potentially terrifying situations they could have gotten into. I wanted to know those characters more. I wanted to know James better. It felt a bit like falling off a cliff to me at the end. A good effort, but why eat up the book with the reiteration of verse after verse of these old songs, when we have the boys on the horizon?

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Disappointed with Hello Beautiful
Revisado: 02-11-24
I chose to read this book because of Oprah’s strong endorsement. The narrative flowed over years of time with alternative radical human errors and little to redeem the errors at the end which was a bit like falling off a cliff. For me a good deal of the time I felt like the author was just trying too hard with clever phraseology. I was disappointed with the book and would not encourage it with others. Sorry Oprah, I did not “love it”. For me this book never really launches itself. And if you ever loved and read Little Women, a classic, you will know that Laurie, also known as Teddy, was definitely not a woman.

If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Historia
Nestled into the cliffs in southern Italy's Amalfi coast, Positano is an artist's vision, with rows of brightly hued houses perched above the sea and picturesque staircases meandering up and down the hillside. Santina, still a striking woman despite old age and the illness that saps her last strength, is spending her final days at her home, Villa San Vito. The magnificent 18th-century palazzo is very different from the tiny house in which she grew up. And as she decides its fate, she must confront the choices that led her here so long ago.
