A fantastic start to a fantastic series
Revisado: 03-09-19
Robinson is a master of the techno thriller. Every time I exhaust an author like Chricton or Rollins, i find myself wanting for more. I was hesitant to start Robinson's collection because I was afraid that his myriad of topics suggested weak writing, but that just isn't the case. He has created a fantastic set of characters ready for his adventures in this prequel to the Chess Team series. This is a well written. fast past, gripping book full of the same horrors and threats I enjoyed in Rollins' work. Sean Ellis, veteran, action man, and co-author, gave this book a delightful sense of realism that one usually finds only in war memoirs. As a veteran, I often find myself gritting my teeth at glaring innacuracies that hinder novels. From equipment to lingo, this is a spot on representation of military operations, if a little dramaticized for entertainment purposes. The only downside was the narrator who, for his effort, had difficulty with some of the jargon used in the novel and, oddly enough, pronouncing anything in French. An amazing ride overall, and a reccomend for fans of techno thrillers and historical thrillers alike.

Historia
In the wilds of Mongolia, a research satellite has crashed, triggering an explosive search for its valuable cargo: a code-black physics project connected to the study of dark energy...and a shocking image of the eastern seaboard of the United States in utter ruin. At the Vatican, a package arrives containing two strange artifacts: a skull scrawled with ancient Aramaic and a tome bound in human skin. DNA evidence reveals that both came from the same body: the long-dead Mongol king Genghis Khan.

A weaker Sigma novel and a weak narrator.
Revisado: 08-22-18
I love Rollins' work and have been reading him for years. This was definitely a weaker entry into the Sigma series. It was disjointed at times, but easy enough to follow. The plot was slightly far fetched, even for him. I honestly though this was shaping up to be a Sigma series clone of Deep Fathom. It is a must read if you're a Sigma fan and love your characters. I wish that the narrator was better. PJ was a much better narrator, and this is the first Sigma without him. The Asian accents are very hard to discern (albeit difficult as an American hard to portray so many different Asian accents) and hard to understand at points. His real weakness is Italian, which sounds more like a crazy German scientist. There were scenes when an Italian was speaking to a Pole and the accents were the same. It was definitely the weakest point of this performance.

Historia
High in the Andes, Dr. Henry Conklin discovers a 500-year-old mummy that should not be there. While deep in the South American jungle, Conklin's nephew, Sam, stumbles upon a remarkable site nestled between two towering peaks, a place hidden from human eyes for thousands of years. Ingenious traps have been laid to ensnare the careless and unsuspecting, and wealth beyond imagining could be the reward for those with the courage to face the terrible unknown.

The devil is in the details.
Revisado: 08-07-18
I always thought that Excavation was one of Rollins more mediocre standalone novels, but it's a great read. I appreciate his attention to detail in the history and myth. The narrator, however, left something to be desired. Many characters had accents, and they weren't captured well. There was something very fake and nasal about the Boston accent, but it was passable. However Maggie's Irish accent was dreadful. She sounded like a leprechaun. The narrator clearly did not research a Belfast accent, and gave a fake, generic accent over the uniquely intoned, more blue collar Belfast irish. It felt like the guy from the lucky charms box was on this adventure. Overall, it captured the story well enough

That's it. The whole story is a throwaway revolving around putting them into a situation that will test Vader and show some more Sheev power. Great read.

It depends on your taste.
Revisado: 09-29-17
If you want a Rogue One/Starship Troopers (novel) blend, this is for you. It provides the front line feeling, an amazing depiction of a popular character from a completely different point of view that will blow your mind, and a look inside what the war looked like under the helmets, both rebel and imperial. I think that it would make an amazing miniseries. It is well written and very detailed.
That being said, if you enjoy the Star Wars novels for the characters, the story, and the emotions, as I do, read below.
Overall it was tedious and unrewarding. I enjoy the drama, love, hate, and passion experienced in the other novels. This reads like a summary of events and a narrative of a soldier and his doubts. It is hard to follow the massive timeline it tries to arc, while trying to get to know the characters. If it focused on one campaign arc and delved more into the characters it would have been more rewarding for me. As it is, it reads like a narrative of a large part of the war for these soldiers, with some moments drawn out needlessly, and moments I was excited for (like training and interpersonal relations among soldiers) condensed into sentences. I found myself disassociated from the characters early on. I REALLY wanted to like this. I was hoping for a Clone Wars style/Death Troopers familiarization with the unit.
I hope I didn't ruin anyone's day by saying thia, and it is all my opinion. I am by no means a professional critic.

Historia
In the war for control of the galaxy between the armies of the dark side and the Republic, former Jedi Master turned ruthless Sith Lord Count Dooku has grown ever more brutal in his tactics. Despite the powers of the Jedi and the military prowess of their clone army, the sheer number of fatalities is taking a terrible toll. And when Dooku orders the massacre of a flotilla of helpless refugees, the Jedi Council feels it has no choice but to take drastic action: targeting the man responsible for so many war atrocities, Count Dooku himself.

Satisfying and written
Revisado: 09-28-17
I really enjoyed this. It was well written, tied in well with the series, and drew out the reader's emotions with the characters. My only complaint is that I had to make a couple of intuitive leaps to rationalize some of the decisions of the Jedi Council. I had to remember this was originally written as a plot driving story arc for the show, and not an original novel concept.

From start to finish this is exactly what I wanted
Revisado: 09-27-17
When I started this book, I was in the "Luke is an arrogant whiney fussypants" crowd. Heir definitely changed my opinion. my appreciation of his character now rivals my affinity of Solo. Being inside his head, understanding the trials of being an aspiring Jedi with no master, and a kid swamped in the rebellion trying to remember to live life while fighting a war was just powerful. Now I have to go watch Empire with a new view on Luke.

A good center of the conflict
Revisado: 02-24-17
This story was quality Pendergast. I really enjoyed the struggle, and finally seeing our hero unwind. Yhe only issues i had were trying to discern Pendergast from his brother since the accent was the same, and that there was a key plotline in the story that ended up going nowhere. Overall it's still a fine book
