Empathy & Subtle Horror
Revisado: 11-04-24
I’ve read all of Ms. Barton‘s novels and they never disappoint. She creates compelling, believable characters who try to hold on to their humanity as they cope with our degraded culture and the predators it has spawned. This was a deeply chilling story because it held so much reality about the war between the sexes. And while I was able to guess who the ultimate villain was early on, I didn’t mind being right because the story was so well told.

Another winner from this author. Predictable villain, but enjoyed it anyway. These characters would make a great series! Great listen, narration was excellent.

I give up—no more modern mysteries
Revisado: 04-08-24
The great reviews sucked me in, and I wasted a credit on this shockingly terrible book. The plot is a mess-so much going on and yet nothing really happening. Lots of backstory that is never developed. So many open loops that never get closed.
The only thing “twisty” about this alleged thriller is the depraved worldview of the author. Apparently these days it’s okay to be a monster if you have the right reasons.
Theme of the book? “The ends justify the means” or perhaps “Do what thou wilt.”
To cleanse my mental palate I must now immediately listen to an Agatha Christie — preferably one in which Hercule Poirot declares “I do not approve of murder.”

Waste of a credit
Revisado: 12-10-23
Vacuous, tedious, filled with cliche cartoonish characters— arrogant rich folks above the law, legalistic religious hypocrites, shallow backbiting co-workers and boss babes —not a single word rang true, not one moment of anything close to suspense.
Audible suggested this as a “hidden gem handpicked just for you.” Thanks for nothing, algorithm.

This novel would make a wonderful film… original plot, sympathetic characters, exceptionally well-written, suspenseful, touching and also hilarious.
I would love to see a series with these characters!
Can’t wait to binge on the rest of Ms. Bauer’s books.

Historia
On the first day of her new job, Harris is called to the scene of a brutal murder at the heart of Surrey society. A shocking crime, with a meticulous killer: the victim’s eyes have been removed and the body drained of blood, with no forensic evidence left at the scene. Her boss insists it must be the return of a killer who escaped justice several years ago, leaving a trail of bloody ritualistic killings. Harris isn’t so sure: both sets of victims have had their eyes removed, but other details are significantly different.

Brilliant, Deep and Riveting
Revisado: 11-06-21
Carl Goodman is a major talent. This book was quite well written, layered with complex themes, and at the same time “unputdownable.” There is some graphic sex and violence (not my usual cup of tea) but it is neither gratuitous nor repetitive.
I listened to 20/20 as part of Audible Plus—would not hesitate to use one of my credits for future books in the series.

Terrific Book
Revisado: 06-02-21
Helpful content—original and very well written. Not the same old rehash that’s in most books about organizing. Full of actionable steps and useful case studies. The author has walked her talk. She is an authority on her subject matter and yet still manages to feel like a friend. The narrator is perfectly paired with the content.

Historia
In Boomers, essayist Helen Andrews addresses the Boomer legacy with scrupulous fairness and biting wit. Following the model of Lytton Strachey's Eminent Victorians, she profiles six of the Boomers' brightest and best. She shows how Steve Jobs tried to liberate everyone's inner rebel but unleashed our stultifying digital world of social media and the gig economy. How Aaron Sorkin played pied piper to a generation of idealistic wonks. How Camille Paglia corrupted academia while trying to save it.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE NARRATOR
Revisado: 02-26-21
It’s as though she is encountering the words for the very first time while narrating them. She mispronounces words, she puts the emphasis on the wrong phrases as though she does not quite grasp the meaning of the sentence.
I simply cannot believe that this person was the best they could find. How could the producers listen to this audio and find it acceptable?
The irony is that this book is, in part, about the decline of artistic standards that took place under the baby boomers reign and the narrator is “Exhibit A” of that very thing.
So frustrating! I am at the beginning of the book I don’t know if I am going to be able to finish it… She is that bad.
This is first negative review I have ever written and I hate to do it, but buyer beware... I would have been better off getting the kindle version and using the text to speech feature.
I may still end up doing that because this is a subject that is near and dear to my heart and I want to support those who are willing to tell the unvarnished truth about this hideous and destructive generation.
The author deserves better. And so does the listener.
