Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

POWERFUL NARRATIVE! The power of self-definition and agency!
Revisado: 10-29-24
I love Everett’s RETELLING of the enslaved “Jim” from Mark Twain’s the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In Everett’s story, “Jim” (his name given to him by the enslaver) uses his agency to rename himself “James.” James clearly understood the horrors of US slavery and part of that horror was being named by the oppressor, the enslaver. By renaming and rearticulating himself (as well as teaching his children to do so also), it gave James the self confidence and determination to resist his enslavement in nonviolent and violent ways of struggle.
The ending was POWERFUL! The narration was excellent! Dominic Hoffman is one of my favorite narrators. I highly recommend this book!

Entertaining and Informative!
Revisado: 10-19-24
This book was excellent! It provided a great thriller suspense. It is a fast and easy read. I learned a lot about heir’s property, the ongoing loss of Black Americans/Gullah Geechee land due to corporate greed and realtor development! I would love to see this book made into a movie. I highly recommend it! Finally, the narration was excellent!

Historia
Throughout her childhood, Safiya Sinclair’s father, a volatile reggae musician and a militant adherent to a strict sect of Rastafari, was obsessed with the ever-present threat of the corrupting evils of the Western world outside their home, and worried that womanhood would make Safiya and her sisters morally weak and impure. For him, a woman’s highest virtue was her obedience.

A Must Read/Audio Listen!
Revisado: 09-09-24
I LOVED this memoir! It is one of the best nonfiction books I’ve read as well as listened to in decades. It is so powerful! It is a great coming-of-age memoir that taps into the intersecting themes of the Rastafarian culture, poverty, and girlhood lived experiences in Jamaica.
When this book debut in 2023, it received so many accolades. Indeed, it is well-deserving of all of the accolades! I highly recommend this book!!!

Historia
Alfa Ndiaye is a Senegalese man who, never before having left his village, finds himself fighting as a so-called “Chocolat” soldier with the French army during World War I. When his friend Mademba Diop, in the same regiment, is seriously injured in battle, Diop begs Alfa to kill him and spare him the pain of a long and agonizing death in No Man’s Land. Unable to commit this mercy killing, madness creeps into Alfa’s mind as he comes to see this refusal as a cruel moment of cowardice.
