Historia
Brilliant, short-lived, incredibly prolific—Schubert is one of the most intriguing figures in music history. While his music attracts a wide audience, much of his private life remains shrouded in mystery, and significant portions of his work have been overlooked. In this major new biography, Lorraine Byrne Bodley takes a detailed look into Schubert's life, from his early years at the Stadtkonvikt to the harrowing battle with syphilis that led to his death at the age of thirty-one.

Brilliant biography
Revisado: 02-21-25
This is a highly detailed biography of Schubert. The scholarship is masterful. The narrator has a pleasant little voice but her attempts at German and any other accent is so painful I lose the continuity as I struggle to figure out who is Shoebut? Or Shuput? Or Sayeri? This is a common problem with numerous otherwise successful audiobooks here on audible. Although some books have been rendered absolutely unlistenable because of this issue, like The Romanovs by Montefiore. I wish the narrator would just pronounce foreign names and words clearly without attempting to pretend they know these languages. Shoebut! I pity the authors who have their work butchered because of this failing.

This is an excellent history of a subject that deserves more attention, at least from me. This is in no way dumbed down or simplified history, in spite of the piping high pitched announcement at the beginning.

This sweeping history of Europe is told with wit and and at times, cinematic style. The gorgeous narration is masterful. I listen to this book repeatedly in its entirety because of its rich detail.

A companion volume to Illuminations, the first collection of Walter Benjamin’s writings, Reflections presents a further sampling of his wide-ranging work. Here Benjamin evolves a theory of language as the medium of all creation, discusses theater and surrealism, reminisces about Berlin in the 1920s, recalls conversations with Bertolt Brecht, and provides travelogues of various cities, including Moscow under Stalin.

Unbearable narrator
Revisado: 08-12-24
I am deeply interested in Benjamin’s thought but I find this narrator’s irritating voice and apparent incomprehension of the material impossible to endure. Unfortunately he has narrated a number of books I would otherwise enjoy.

Historia
This is the intimate story of 20 tsars and tsarinas, some touched by genius, some by madness, but all inspired by holy autocracy and imperial ambition. Simon Sebag Montefiore's gripping chronicle reveals their secret world of unlimited power and ruthless empire building, overshadowed by palace conspiracy, family rivalries, sexual decadence, and wild extravagance, with a global cast of adventurers, courtesans, revolutionaries, and poets, from Ivan the Terrible to Tolstoy and Pushkin.

Incomprehensible narrator
Revisado: 06-17-24
Love this author and Russian history. But the narrator was reprehensible - impossible to understand. He sped through the text as if he had a mouthful of oatmeal. Does he hate this material? Had to return it unfortunately. Very disappointing.

Historia
One of the Modern Scholar’s most popular professors, Timothy B. Shutt, brings his literary acumen and trademark enthusiasm to the study of the epic poems that sit at the very wellspring of Western culture. The earliest surviving works of Greek literature, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey exert a continuing influence on modern culture, even today shaping people’s values and conduct. In the tales of Achilles and Hector, of Odysseus and Penelope, Homer explored the notion of arête, which translates as "excellence" or "virtue".

Magnificent reading of Immortal Work
Revisado: 01-20-24
I was not prepared for the utterly engrossing brilliance of this ancient work. The narrator’s beautiful, mellifluous reading captivated me with his dramatization. I was hypnotized, captivated, and at the end I wept from awe and the thrill of the experience.

Historia
Norman Lebrecht has devoted half of his life to pondering and researching the mindset of the Jewish intellectuals, writers, scientists, and thinkers who turned the tides of history and shaped the world today as we know it. In Genius & Anxiety, Lebrecht begins with the Communist Manifesto in 1847 and ends in 1947, when Israel was founded. This robust, magnificent volume, beautifully designed, is an urgent and necessary celebration of Jewish genius and contribution.

Well paced, interesting and ironic
Revisado: 12-20-23
This was a valuable book. I listened to the audiobook, then purchased the physical book and read it while I listened to it again. The narrator had a pleasant delivery, unlike some other audiobooks I have found to be unlistenable. I purchased this before the horror of the October 7 pogrom, but read/listened to it afterwards. The war is still raging and I am 100% behind Israel and the IDF. Born into a secular family of several generations of atheists and rabbis, until this war I had not explored or even thought of my ethnicity. I began exploring the history of Israel and the Middle East as a consequence. This book fit my current explorations perfectly. I’ve always enjoyed Norman Lebrecht’s writing and have several of his snarky, funny books on classical music. This book is an entirely different subject, but just as interesting, if not more so, than his other books.
