Ugh - was this really a Grisham?
Revisado: 10-31-23
Where are the unforeseen twists? It ended and I had to check that I hadn’t fallen asleep, it just sort of fizzled to a close. Every other Grisham book I’ve read left me waiting for the next one - this one … a sore disappointment.
It never engaged me - I struggled through it because JG is such a talented author otherwise, but sadly, this one was a dud. I had more excitement waiting for it to drop than at any point in the book.
It would have been an improvement if it included the test kitchen recipes and could have been classified as a cookbook.

Another good Grisham read!
Revisado: 10-30-20
I love following this town - all of it. It’s nice to have a little background on some of the characters without feeling too much like a duplicated sequel. It’s well done.
The story is good - there were a few twists I expected, but didn’t come up. Maybe that was the twist. I didn’t miss them terribly. No big deal.
I did feel that the story went on in detail for a while, but then wrapped quickly with a lot of storylines tied up at once. Kind of a roller coaster building and then the big finish. I’m left wanting more. (It’s a good thing)
All in - it’s a good read. I’m not sorry I bought it. And I’ll probably listen again some day. It’s worth your time. And a little mercy.
Looking forward to the next in the series / I hope there is one.

Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Intense ...
Revisado: 05-05-19
This is a good book. One of Grisham’s better ones. It does get pretty intense at the end. Don’t finish it before bed if you’re a deep thinker and emotional type. But I definitely recommend it.
Also fun to see some of the side characters pop up again - I love Harry Rex and even Judge Atlee brings a familiar element to the story. I think it makes the story easier to get into at the beginning when you already recognize a couple of the characters.

I still have faith... in Baldacci
Revisado: 02-21-19
So... I LOVE almost every Baldacci book. This one - wasn't my favorite. Once I got into it - I was hooked and it was good, but I had some trouble separating the characters, and I just didn't get sucked in the way I usually do. The narration is a good reader, but that's just it... he reads. If I was trying to go to sleep and have someone read me a story this would be perfect (and that's not a dig on the narrator, sometimes I just like to listen and fall off to sleep). He has a great voice, and his performance is flawless. Just not what I wanted today. Maybe that's why I had trouble following. I found my mind wandering and losing whole chapters... and not really wanting to go back and catch up.
By the end of the book, I was sorry it was over, and wanted a little more... it's a good read, a good book, but not the best I've listened to. It took a LONG time to get attached to the characters and lost in this one.

Loving this series - my only complaint is that there are only 6 books. Would love more! I couldn't stop listening and it didn't disappoint - kept me engaged all the way to the very end.

Great book, clever story
Revisado: 03-30-17
This book diverged from the traditional mystery. There were some cool twists and I thought the narration was good. Not sure where the other reviews come from. I've listened to all of baldacci's books - and these Amos Decker ones are my new favorites. They bring a fresh approach and new characters. I hope Melvin Mars appears in future stories!

The dissonant team heads to remotest Yellowknife - mining country - to pursue an ever more sinister trail.
