Historia
In January 2012, having covered a Somali pirate trial in Hamburg for Spiegel Online International, Michael Scott Moore traveled to the Horn of Africa to write about piracy and ways to end it. In a terrible twist of fate, Moore himself was kidnapped and subsequently held captive by Somali pirates for 977 days. Yet Moore’s own struggle is only part of the story: The Desert and the Sea falls at the intersection of reportage, memoir, and history.

Decent but it really could be shorter, its constantly repeating itself vs telling the subject with short examples then going into the chapters per culture to cover them there

Revisado: 04-24-22
Started off VERY interesting and high but after chapter 3 it started falling off and when schizophrenia discussion started it went way off. Really stupid science points with not enough evidence at all. I understand at the start it says this will happen but for 2/3 the book? Meh at best

Historia
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.

Revisado: 04-22-22
Not for the faint of heart, HUGE details on the human body, surgery, pranks of university students with dead bodies etc. Its an interesting read for sure but at the cost of feeling ill due to the gruesome details but then again based on the name of the book I shouldve guessed as much lol

Beginning with opium, the “joy plant,” which has been used for 10,000 years, Thomas Hager tells a captivating story of medicine. His subjects include the largely forgotten female pioneer who introduced smallpox inoculation to Britain, the infamous knockout drops, the first antibiotic, which saved countless lives, the first antipsychotic, which helped empty public mental hospitals, Viagra, statins, and the new frontier of monoclonal antibodies. This is a deep, wide-ranging, and wildly entertaining book.

Revisado: 04-09-22
overall, a amazing story but...its an unbelievable amount of religion and bible quotes and the same ones again and again that it becomes exhausting. If it was half the size maybe it would have more impact. Happy someone got out of a cult but I expected more to hear than what I got.
