Overly dramatic performance for a mediocre plot. could be better and quite disappointing. one thing about book series is that it's often predictable because of the same pattern used time and time again.

I dislike how storyline us just so flat and uninteresting. Doesn't pique my curiosity either. I'm an avid thriller fan and I have to hold this up to higher standard. this could genuinely be a better book.

The narration threw me off. it is overbearing and overdramatic- dragged too long and too painful to listen. I thought I'm used to imogen church's narration but this is painful. the worse book I've listened (plot, narration, everything). I tried my hardest to tolerate but I ended up given up before I even close to the middle of the book. besides the narration, the plot is absolutely cliché! why British thriller writers love to pretend that they can write cult story more interesting than the real cult documentary itself? it feels forced, like second handed experience and exoticizing certain types of uncommon lifestyles. no such things can be interesting enough if its not done in genuine experience. well,

On a warm spring evening, guests gather in a perfectly manicured garden to celebrate Maggie and Len’s twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Maggie leans against the apple tree, watching her fun-loving husband and darling children as her heart swells with pride. As the joyful party atmosphere disappears into the night, close by, the lifeless body of a young woman is pulled from a river. Slipping upstairs to find the special gift for her adoring husband, Maggie stumbles across something else hidden amongst the dusty boxes of family keepsakes.

I can't believe how long and ridiculous this book is
Revisado: 01-01-24
The plot is really dumb and feels dragging too long. this is not crime thriller, but a drama novel about a woman's guilt for being stupidly suspicious and not telling anyone- her own fault. wow. I just tortured myself listening to this. no character development and i dont think youre rooting for anyone in this plot. you've been warned. but I must say, the narration is not that bad. his voice as a crying woman is hilarious and sounded like a mockery. I think the narrator saved the novel from being an absolute flop though.

Quick read that merits a few repeats. Easy to follow, but challenging to break the ingrained patterns of behavior. Very grateful for these teachings. I listen to it on the subway when I’m most in need of patience & calm. Highly applicable to daily life.

Predictable
Revisado: 11-14-19
It's actually quite awful. The characters were one dimensional, the storyline was so predictable and the antagonism of some of the characters was made so extreme to the point of overly dramatic. Not interested, not even entertaining- can't finish it. This one is a downer.

Historia
Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

Victorian Racism
Revisado: 08-20-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, good storytelling and drama. But also, the I will tell them the context of history in relation to British imperialism in South Asia.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Making of a Marchioness?
I'm actually very shock to find that one of my favorite children books writers is a complete racist. I grew up reading 'a little princess' and 'secret garden' and remembered how much I loved them. The blatant racism and prejudices against people of color in this novel is astounding! The author doesn't even produce a context on the damage that British had done to South Asian countries and their life. The lighthearted depiction of dark-skinned people as indigenous, superstitious, evil-spirited, dark and ugly are just so horrendous and untrue. This is the lazy part of the writer as she didn't even try to move out from herself and society to really did her research on South Asian culture. On top of it, the justification of religion (Christianity) as the main source of nobility and kindness to the point of dumbness, is just over the top and is a complete dismissal of the complicated character and culture that the British considered as 'other'.
What about Lucy Scott’s performance did you like?
Great performance
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It make me angry just because of the level of prejudice and racism inherent in the writing. I couldn't get through it in the beginning, it sickened me. But as I finished reading it, I learnt more about the British history and representation in Victorian literature. I have to come to understand and accept it's distortion and unjust depiction of the characters as part of a larger picture of imperialism.
The depiction of the main character, who is white, noble, is equally and annoyingly idealistic and upsetting. She is so dumb and submissive.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Revisado: 10-16-16
Would you try another book from Fredrik Backman and/or George Newbern?
not really
Any additional comments?
It's a 'feel good' fiction that is not boring at all (narration is superb). However, the storyline is predictable, similar to watching a hollywood drama or blockbuster feel good comedy-drama. It is not a masterpiece, there's no irony, mystery or twist in it. I expect more but I think this book is enjoyable for general public. I just didn't care that much about it.

dissapointing
Revisado: 07-09-15
Any additional comments?
I was interested in Elizabeth Bowen from reading her short stories. Then I found this audiobook and got really excited. I was very dissapointed to find that it does not live up to expectation. The story was too long, linear, boring and a lot of unsignificant details that could be omitted (perhaps Bowen is better as a short story writer). The woman who read this story has a nice voice but not a good narrator. She reads in a very slow pace. I also think the french accents is bad, inaccurate and most of all, annoying (and it continues throughout the book!). What a torture! Also, the novel is probably not suitable as an audiobook. I would download Virginia Woolf ten times over this one.
