In between dealing with her other adult children, two opinionated sisters, an ill husband, and her own postponed dreams - BJ still manages to hold down a job delivering room service at a hotel. Her son Dexter is about to be paroled from prison; Quentin, the family success, can’t be bothered to lend a hand; and taking care of two lively grandsons is the last thing BJ thinks she needs. So Real
Revisado: 06-27-24
First of all the choice of narrators was chefs kiss. I need to hear more books read by Phylicia Rashad!
Next - loved the POVs telling the story. I found myself laughing and crying and guffawing- Nurse Kim.
This was a wonderfully told story. And now I have to tell the world about it. Specifically my sisters and mother.
I don’t have very many that I label as such, but this will definitely be a reread many times over.

Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

I wasn’t ready
Revisado: 09-28-22
This story held bits and pieces of me. It’s amazing that I could relate to such an extraordinary woman.
I am so glad that she narrated this book. I crrrriiiied. I wish I could go back in time and hug her and her sisters.
Her description of poverty, trauma, and sisterhood was …… I don’t have words for it.
This book was the story of many women. Well done Viola.
Her story is a difficult one to brave through. I’m not sure if I could’ve read this story if I didn’t know that her outcome was triumphant. The amount of trauma she went through…. I had to know that things/life would be better.

Fairytale endings don’t exist
Revisado: 09-11-22
Well… that was a lot. I liked the idea of a book soundtrack.
The poetic way in which it was written is sometimes tedious to follow.
I applaud the author on taking a story that has been part of the headlines for years and end it in a way I wasn’t expecting.
I won’t read it again because of the heaviness and triggering aspects of the book but I would definitely recommend it.

Another Hit!
Revisado: 02-06-19
This book had me from beginning to end. I found myself getting teary eyed during various parts of the book. Connecting with the character in the anxiety that comes from living in an unstable home environment intensified by drug addiction and poverty.
if you read The Hate U Give, you will absolutely love this book. if you are new to the author, you will not be disappointed!
Bri and her family reminds us that living your dreams will not always be easy but it is necessary to continue to fight for them!

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Everyone's story
Revisado: 08-10-18
This is a story of family, community, and love. It gives us insight into the life of Star and her family, friends and the community she belongs to. What happens when tragedy strikes close to home?
There is self reflection and action, but most of all their is a sense of responsibility to the fellow woman and man.
I laughed, cried and felt empowered! Great story.

Historia
Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a Midwestern girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire listeners. Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by "inner soldiers", Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating.

The Best
Revisado: 08-06-18
This was the 1st book I purchased. It was the best decision I made. This book was amazing!
The best decision they made was to have her read it. I listened to and from work, on my lunch break and in the shower!
I felt like I was her friend as I listened to her narrate the most intimate details of her life. And like most of you I know her from being the mother of Hollywood and it was refreshing to get to know her back story and her struggles. What I loved most, was the fact that she was unapologetic about her career pursuits and lovelife.
She gave me strength!
