Fun, lighthearted and handles death/grief really nicely

Though the premise of the story is unbelievable, I liked the escapism it offered.
Loved the way Kimberley deftly discussed grief and the concept of definitive separation. Saved the quote ‘I don’t fear new love, I fear old pain’. Entertaining

Chapter 1: Forced myself to get through the ENTIRE chapter about a rat which I’m still confused about whether this is a girl or a rat. Almost gave up and returnes the book at chapter 1 but thought I’d persist.
Léo: was called ‘Arrogant, unkind, self absorbed’ by another character which is nicer than what I would have written. Initially thought the woman called him Theo then realised it’s Leo. Still can’t draw up any sympathy for him. Don’t like the narrator’s accent for Léo - doesn’t fit what a Minister for Culture would sound like to me. Couldn’t even cooperate with his class mate who is top ranked for a grand jeu game - so immature and somewhat emotionally bullies the other. No redeeming qualities that I’ve discovered
Grand jeu: what a cop out to say you can’t describe the game and then say it isn’t music, math etc but never really paint what it is
Magister: every single time this word is narrated ‘ma-gi-ster’ I wince (g like guitar not g like magic magician; if this was the intended pronunciation the maggister like maggot would make more sense). That’s a lot of wincing in this book.
Contemplating whether to DNF and return but still trying to continue to listen to whether this is the same book that some rate so highly

Main female character is unlikeable: weak, a liar, keeps fainting, obstructs justice by withholding things she should tell the police in a murder investigation, says she’ll feed her neighbours cats but then feels it is ok to skip their meals by repeatedly forgetting to feed them (should call PETA on her), inconsistent, repetitive (“why am I even talking to you” says this multiple times and keeps talking to the person). Gets all indignant about being considered a possible murder suspect despite being found at the scene of the crime with the victim’s blood all over her. Ugh, the murderer killed the wrong person at the beginning of this book. Narrator’s attempt at a British male accent is offputting but otherwise the better thing about this audible book. Disappointing for a bibliophile given what was touted. Struggled to finish this even at 2.5x - can’t wait to return this book - wish I could get my time back

Despite being free with the monthly Audible Original selection I feel this was a few hours of my life I wish I could get back.

Would not recommend.

Narration
- voices were too similar, which made it very hard to tell one character apart from another especially during dialogue scenes
- lots of wasted time with silence/sound effects
- the accent is annoying and also more difficult to understand. It would not detract from the storyline to change the accents
- noise: background noises were detracting. The suddenly ‘interlude music and chapter announcements’ were jarring and broke the flow. The sudden louder noise had me wince esp since the chapter narration seemed softer
- the main character Dr Buckley is very unlikeable. I almost wished Alfred Dinklage had stabbed her with the sharpened plastic spoon instead of the psychiatrist and saved me from wasting my time
- the characters do one idiotic thing after another
