Historia
Dar Oakley - the first Crow in all of history with a name of his own - was born two thousand years ago. When a man learns his language, Dar finally gets the chance to tell his story. He begins his tale as a young man, and how he went down to the human underworld and got hold of the immortality meant for humans, long before Julius Caesar came into the Celtic lands; how he sailed West to America with the Irish monks searching for the Paradise of the Saints; and how he continuously went down into the land of the dead and returned.

Amazing book
Revisado: 04-17-18
I love John Crowley and see him as one of the best writer currently out there. This book only strengthened m admiration for his work. This novel follows the multiple lives that of a crow Dar Oakley as he interacts with various humans over at last many centuries if not longer. Those of you who are familiar with Crowley's works will know that he writes of worlds that combine fantasy and reality in a skillful way that to me, really is more of a look at our world from a very different perspective thus offering insight into the deep issues of human kind. In this work The extraordinarily well developed characters grapple with love, aging, death, the quest for immortality and how humans fit within the natural world.
It sounds very deep, and it is, but it is also very gentle and simple. I recommend this book to all.

Historia
In the vein of classic authors such as Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke, Nathan Arkwright is a seminal author of the 20th century. At the end of his life he becomes reclusive and cantankerous, refusing to appear before or interact with his legion of fans. Little does anyone know, Nathan is putting into motion his true timeless legacy. Convinced that humanity cannot survive on Earth, his Arkwright Foundation dedicates itself to creating a colony on an earthlike planet several light-years distant.

Highs and lows
Revisado: 09-15-17
The novel is constructed like a series of novellas all featuring members of the same family over generations. Some of these novellas are better than others. The story begins with a young man in 1939 who is breaking in as a writer in the growing sci-fi genre. This portion of the novel is very good. The characters are nicely developed and I was fully engaged.
The novel then goes on dropping in on future generations. None of the remains "novellas" is as good as the first. Most are moderately engaging but there are holes in the story and some factual problems that for me were problematic. Sci-fi requires suspension of disbelief- in other words the the reader must accept the new "reality " created by the writer. For me this is harder if the novel contains simple error of fact. This novel has "Indian" as the language of India (now not in the future) and the Caribbean as being in the Southern Hemisphere. These are examples - there are others. Both are wrong. Some people will not be bothered by this. I was.
All of that having been said. I did enjoy the novel; it had some very good parts and was enjoyable.

a new classic
Revisado: 03-07-17
Truly one of the best Sci-Fi novels I have read in years. The story is brilliantly told. The characters are well developed. The style is reminiscent of classic novels from Clarke and Asimov. Having a basic understanding of Chinese history during the Cultural Revolution is helpful, but not necessary, as the story begins there.
Love this book.

No
Has Vampire Vow turned you off from other books in this genre?
Yes
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I am not shocked by the sacrilegious subject matter of this book; indeed as a gay Christian I was intrigued by the possible temptation of Christ by a male admirer. What disappointed me, is the idea that Jesus would be tempted by the lead character of this book. He is utterly devoid of any redeeming qualities. The book is trash; I could not finish it. Truly one of the worst books I have ever read.Additionally if a person is going to write historical fiction, do some research. The main character, while a soldier in Tiberius' legions talks about the Baths of Caracalla, which were not built for some 200 years after Tiberius. A small point but nonetheless one more reason to save your money and time by not buying this book.
