Historia
Sarat Chestnut, born in Louisiana, is only six when the Second American Civil War breaks out in 2074. But even she knows that oil is outlawed, that Louisiana is half underwater, that unmanned drones fill the sky. And when her father is killed and her family is forced into Camp Patience for displaced persons, she quickly begins to be shaped by her particular time and place until, finally, through the influence of a mysterious functionary, she is turned into a deadly instrument of war.

Unique idea
Revisado: 04-05-17
Liked the idea of future civil war based on fuel dispute. However, the narrator's usual dialogue was too monotone and my mind drifted actually rebelled. He does a good job with character voices and that didn't help during 70% that he was reading. If story was compelling the narration would not have brought it down this much.
Good first novel. Wait for second.

Pleasant surprise
Revisado: 01-01-17
Second in the series. I had no expectations for this series and found the characters (good) likable and flawed. The bad guys are a little more one dimensional. It takes place in 1959 Castro defeats Batista. The historical plot line intertwines with homicides Cassidy and his partner are assigned. And then there's his love life. All in all fast fun read.

Historia
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

Nice to revisit Three Pines
Revisado: 08-28-14
Enjoyed The Long Way Home. I love visiting Three Pines, Gamache, Claire, Ruth et al. This book did not let down in character developent or consistency. It built slowly and then raced (geographic and literary) along to the climax. Two weaknesses: slow start and predictable ending. Despite the fact that it ended in a way I felt inevitable. Recommend it.

Not a thriller!
Revisado: 01-24-14
I purchased this based on good reviews and for Julie Whelan narration. It is awful. Repetitive and preachy. Woman are negative caricatures and the men though more dimensional are still weak. There are page/minutes of poorly written, trite sermons.
Not worth the money/credit.

Don't get the good reviews.
Revisado: 10-30-13
This is a terrible book on so many levels. There are some interesting ideas however it is poorly written and each of the story lines has different yet significant problems. Editing would have eliminated the many repetitive sentences and paragraphs. For me the serious historical events were made trite. Minka's real life history is filled with tragic, true and heart-wrenching events and there are so many books that do it better. I did want to like this book...

Historia
A high-profile attorney in the middle of a leave of absence following a personal tragedy is drawn back into the legal arena amidst a media firestorm when he agrees to represent a popular rap artist accused of brutally murdering his pop star girlfriend. With its powerful voice, pause-resisting tension, and strong cast of characters, Adam Mitzner’s novels are reminiscent of such best-selling authors as Scott Turow and John Grisham.

A typical court room drama.
Revisado: 05-30-13
This is a fairly typical court room drama. But better. The characters, the protagonist's dilemma make for an original drama. Look forward to the next Mitzner novel.

Murder. Scandal. Politics. And one billionaire heiress so dangerous in so many ways. An explosive Lucas Davenport thriller from number one New York Times best-selling author John Sandford. All hell has broken loose in the capital. An influential state senator has been caught with something very, very nasty on his office computer. The governor can’t believe it - the senator’s way too smart for that, even if he is from the other party. Something’s not right.

I have read this entire series and there are some duds. This is not one of them. The story stretches reality. However just enjoy the ride. It was a fun listen. Nice to have a good Lucas story with his great supporting cast: Del, Kid, Virgil, Weather are well represented.

"Ninety-five days, and then I'll be safe. I wonder whether the procedure will hurt. I want to get it over with. It's hard to be patient. It's hard not to be afraid while I'm still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn't touched me yet. Still, I worry. They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness. The deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don't."
