Historia
As a columnist for the New York Times who writes often about spiritual topics for a skeptical audience, Ross Douthat understands that many of us—whether we are agnostic, somewhat religious, or longtime believers—want to have more faith than we do. But we think we can't believe the way our ancestors did, knowing what we know now—can we? With clear and straightforward arguments, Believe shows how religious belief makes sense of the order of the cosmos and our place within it, illuminates the mystery of consciousness, and explains the persistent reality of encounters with the supernatural.

Expensive and open minded journey through religion
Revisado: 04-23-25
The middle chapters made the assumption that there are many people that are in “the state of nature” in regard to religion and spirituality. I don’t know anybody in that category.

Historia
Carlos Eire, popular professor and gifted writer, chronicles the 200-year era of the Renaissance and Reformation with particular attention to issues that persist as concerns in the present day. Eire connects the Protestant and Catholic Reformations in new and profound ways, and he demonstrates convincingly that this crucial turning point in history not only affected people long gone but continues to shape our world and define who we are today.

Consequential history
Revisado: 11-04-24
The granular detail of the multitudinous reformations of the 15th and 16th centuries was revealing, informative and surprising. There was a lot of detail of individual reformers and schools of reformations that are otherwise little discussed, so I learned a lot. The author’s final summations were instructive and overlapping on how the unintended reformation reaches down to our current day ala Brad Gregory‘s book of the same title “The Unintended Reformation“.

Historia
After the staggering slaughter of back-to-back world wars, the West embraced the ideal of the "open society". The promise: By liberating ourselves from the old attachments to nation, clan, and religion that had fueled centuries of violence, we could build a prosperous world without borders, freed from dogmas and managed by experts. But the populism and nationalism that are upending politics in America and Europe are a sign that after three generations, the postwar consensus is breaking down.

Crucifixion, the Romans believed, was the worst fate imaginable, a punishment reserved for slaves. How astonishing it was, then, that people should have come to believe that one particular victim of crucifixion - an obscure provincial by the name of Jesus - was to be worshipped as a god. Dominion explores the implications of this shocking conviction as they have reverberated throughout history.

Christianity’s implicit pervasiveness
Revisado: 06-26-24
Tom Holland‘s book “Dominion”covered a lot of ground and therefore definitely was idiosyncratic in picking and choosing examples along the chronological way. The close attention to sometimes obscure episodes or stories was an interesting technique, but the overarching theme of Christian influence sometimes seemed lost. For me, the books ending, revealing current examples of the implicit Christian foundation of a wide spectrum of thought in our culture was eye opening. His use of Nietzsche’s prescient observations of our current time were valuable. Finally, his very personal observations in the afterword were dramatic, poignant and meaningful. As for the reading of the audiobook, the readers voice was too much schoolhouse pedagogy for my taste.

It was on the Silk Roads that East and West first encountered each other through trade and conquest, leading to the spread of ideas, cultures, and religions. From the rise and fall of empires to the spread of Buddhism and the advent of Christianity and Islam, right up to the great wars of the 20th century - this book shows how the fate of the West has always been inextricably linked to the East.

Intriguing and essential history
Revisado: 06-12-23
Wonderfully comprehensive history, spanning centuries of time and covering from China to the Mediterranean and Europe. Rich and nuanced coverage of trade, politics and people. One of the most surprising parts of this discussion was the importance of oil and energy in the last 200 years. The prose sparkles, and the audible reading is spectacular! One small downside is the author has an anti-American bias shining through while discussing the last 100 years.

In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn’t we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia?

Telling the truth
Revisado: 08-06-22
Bringing together and presenting unequivocal proof of western anti-westernism and American anti-Americanism. Here is a litany of the astonishing, depressing, unrelenting bashing of the west and of “whiteness”. Both the uniqueness and the destructiveness of this type of thinking and action is brought to the forefront. The author balances this with examples of the greatness of the west and the blessings that have flowed from it. Let us always defend truth and real multiculturalism and strive to create and maintain a true color blind society that judges persons on the “content of their character rather than the color of their skin”

How does science work? Does it tell us what the world is "really" like? What makes it different from other ways of understanding the universe? In Theory and Reality, Peter Godfrey-Smith addresses these questions by taking the listener on a grand tour of 100 years of debate about science. The result is a completely accessible introduction to the main themes of the philosophy of science.

Balanced history of science
Revisado: 08-11-21
This was an interesting, and I would say comprehensive account of philosophy of science including colorful anecdotes and personalities, and of course delving into major issues of epistemology, evidence, theories etc. The book was a bit dense in parts, and certain sections were unsuited for audio enjoyment, e.g. discussing Bayes theorem. Overall, I learned a lot about philosophy of science and thoroughly admired the reading of the text by Matthew Lloyd Davies.

Throughout history the world’s greatest conquerors have made their mark not just on the battlefield, but in the societies they have transformed. Genghis Khan conquered by arms and bravery, but he ruled by commerce and religion. He created the world’s greatest trading network and drastically lowered taxes for merchants, but he knew that if his empire was going to last, he would need something stronger and more binding than trade. He needed religion.

The time, place and geography of the story of the Mongol leader Genghis Khan and his successors is truly incredible. An edict of religious toleration was promulgated by Genghis Khan around the same time as the Magna Carta in England… Amazing!
