Frankenstein revisited
Revisado: 05-28-22
All these years and I never knew what a magnificent voice character actor Tom Baker has been! Each character was distinct and I swear I could hear the actual Sarah Jane Smith persona as if 40+ years washed away. The story was a delightful retelling of Frankenstein's monster and the obsession of its creator. There was even a vivid scene of torch bearing hunters chasing down the monster. Going to listen to this again and again.

Winner of the 1961 Hugo Award for Best Novel and widely considered one of the most accomplished, powerful, and enduring classics of modern speculative fiction, Walter M. Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz is a true landmark of 20th-century literature—a chilling and still-provocative look at a postapocalyptic future.

The one that sets the standard
Revisado: 12-23-17
A Canticle for Liebowitz takes the nacent ideas fostered by H.G. Wells and Jules Verne (and other fantastical minds of the 19th century) and creates the foundation for intellectual early 20th Century Post-apocalyptic literature.
Every time I read Hugh Howey's Wool series, watch films like Mad Max, et al. I harken back to this precisely written future history.
Liebowitz was a 20th Century Jewish man who lived a rather ordinary life. He left behind a shopping list in a bomb shelter which leads to his sainthood.
The religious order of monks that declare Liebowitz a saint, is only doing what religious practitioners do...making meaning from disorder.
Tom Weiner's narration doesn't get in the way of the story but rather enhances it by staying a respectful distance in the background.
Regardless of how many post apocalyptic tomes have been or will be written, this one sets the pace for them all.

Historia
Max Tudor has adapted well to his post as vicar of St. Edwold's in the idyllic village of Nether Monkslip. The quiet village seems the perfect home for Max, who has fled a harrowing past as an MI5 agent. But this new-found serenity is quickly shattered when the highly vocal and unpopular president of the Women's Institute turns up dead at the Harvest Fayre. The death looks like an accident, but Max's training as a former agent kicks in, and before long he suspects foul play.

Average mystery full of cliches and stereotypes. Good listening for a relaxing commute after a tough day at the office.
Silly premise of a former international undercover agent turned priest because of something terrible that happened while on the job.
Overall an acceptable listen, albeit quite simple.

Bravo to The Doctor, George Mann, and Nicholas Briggs. Great performance and engaging story .
I know I'll listen to Engines of War on Audible again and again. Other, more prolific reviewers can fill in the details of this War Doctor saga for you. Suffice it for me to say: if you love the doctor and effective sound FX including Briggs' patent Dalek rendition, you will probably love this Audio version.
Enjoy!

Controlled Chaos Reigns!
Revisado: 05-26-12
Where does Guards! Guards! rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards! has been around for a while but the story is refreshing and hilarious now as it was the first time I heard it on BBC Radio 7. It remains one of my favorites.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Guards! Guards!?
The most thrilling part for me was the descriptions of movement in the actions scenes. In fact, vivid descriptions are what keep me coming back again and again to Terry Pratchett and Nigel Planer.
What about Nigel Planer’s performance did you like?
Nigel Planer is an interesting character actor on telly who brings his lively personality into the roles he plays. He brings that ability to bring characters to life in audio perhaps even better. Switching back and forth between cockney and posh, the listener has an easy time imagining each individual as they frolic across the stage of the mind.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There are squiritng-milk-out-the-nose funny moments in this comedy of errors; I strongly suggest that you listen with your mouth empty!.

Funny, creative, quintessential Pratchett
Revisado: 05-12-12
Would you listen to Night Watch again? Why?
I would listen to this story over and over again because it is just dead clever! The audio was a bit fuzzy but worth it. Stephen Briggs' characterizations were brilliant.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sam Vimes because he in a strange way, he reminds me a little of the main character in Mort! A little confused and inept but with an inner strength and occasional cleverness.
Which scene was your favorite?
Hard to say which scene was my favorite...probably when Vimes got his rank as Sergeant at Arms from the Captain and for $25 talked himself into a strange sort of respect from Snouty.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The entire story moved me...to laughter.
Any additional comments?
Pratchett's stories are more than humorous; they are thought-provoking in an Existentialist-time traveler sort of way. How does one individual exist in a universe of possibilities?

Voice not impressive
Revisado: 04-15-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend any Jim Butcher book to a friend or anyone else. However, no offense meant to the reader, but I am used to hearing the more melifluous tones of English (UK) Audible Readers so was not too impressed with the flat North American tones of James Marsters. Regardless, it is a good story.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden is always good for a chuckle even in the face of most dire circumstances.
