This is probably the lightest book of the series but that ENDING. I don’t know how I feel but it’s so fun

Historia
When we've gone through an unwanted or traumatic experience, the last thing we want is to take responsibility for it, because that implies that we've done something wrong. But what if that's not the case at all? In this episode I'll lay out why claiming responsibility for unwanted experiences is an EMPOWERING choice to make every time. The whole podcast is really good. I found it on the worst day of my life and listened on the second worst. It made me feel that there is hope.

Author does the story an injustice with cherry-picking
Revisado: 10-14-21
Being very familiar with the story of the Romanov family, I expected this to be mostly fiction, but I was surprised at how much the author western washed the whole thing. Adding in gruesome details that simply never happened and changing the ending of certain characters to meet what she deemed to be the feel good ending felt very cheap. There was also zero personality to the main character. Every time she had dialogue I wished she didn’t. She never added anything, and in fact knowing the ending her dialogue makes even less sense. She didn’t come off as mysterious, just poorly written. There are a lot of details that line up with the true story but they seem sprinkled in there to say “see? I did my research.” I waited to be drawn in by the book and was left with a big middle finger in my face by the end of it, seemingly telling the reading “got you!” When no actual twist had happened at all. Russian culture is pretty much a non thing in this book. The author even goes as far as to say Russian names aren’t to her liking at the end. Why write a book on a historical event of a culture you know nothing about, and don’t care to.

Captivating story, left a lot to be desired
Revisado: 09-20-21
The performance of this audiobook was stellar. Being a fairly avid audible user, I’ve learned to really appreciate how much a book is affected by the performer. However, the story itself lacked in a lot of ways. It felt as if the author had to tell us how to feel a lot, and spent paragraphs justifying it. There was so much emphasis on the whole plot being potentially devastating to the family, when in reality - would anyone really care at all? The characters spent over half the book pining for something that they also let go of very easily. And the romantic parts slipped in there felt unnatural and poorly written. They added nothing to the story whatsoever. It was a poorly executed good idea.
