Historia
In 1990, while serving a sentence in San Quentin for armed robbery, Jarvis Jay Masters was implicated as an accessory in the murder of a prison guard. A 23-year-old Black man, Jarvis was sentenced to death in the gas chamber. While in the maximum security section of Death Row, using the only instrument available to him—a ball-point pen filler—Masters's astounding memoir is a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit and the talent of a fine writer.

All parents should listen to or read this book
Revisado: 01-26-25
As a parent, I couldn’t help but notice how a child’s life can go south so fast, made worse by the environment in which they are raised. I was appalled by the majority of the foster care depicted in this book. There must be some special hot hell for such care givers.
While Jarvis must have been a nightmare child to care for, one can’t help but think that prison might have been his best place to keep him away from all the crime and potentially being killed on the street. Sad that he ended up being framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Reminds me of Anthony Hintons story. There’s almost no justice for black men in America. What a shame!

Historia
Robert and Mkiwa Livingston are happily ensconced in their tranquil life in Geneva, Switzerland, when Robert's best friend drops dead from a brain aneurysm, sparking a mid-life crisis. Nostalgic for the New England of his youth, Robert begs his wife for a chance to go back to his native America. As the Livingstons settle into their new home in Marblehead, Massachusetts, they - along with the rest of the country - become engrossed in a popular TV show called Quiet Time, about a family who decide to give up all electronic devices and smartphones for one year.

This story is so real
Revisado: 01-26-25
I loved this story and connected with it! From the uprooting of family from one country to another with teens in tow, to finding some form of sanity in the most unexpected situations. Not because Mkiwa is Kenyan like me, but mostly because the career and social disruption is so relatable. I love how this story is written and the orator is phenomenal.
Well done team!

Quite an emotional book
Revisado: 04-06-24
For some reason the first part took a while to warm me up but that soon caught up. I loved how the story transported me to Ethiopia and other countries in the region including my homeland, Kenya.
Well researched. Well written (even if it made me cry a few times). Well delivered.

Historia
Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This audio is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form, but as it actually is - complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human. Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad.

Helps you appreciate doctors
Revisado: 03-20-24
Doctors are people too! That was the big lesson from this book.
They make mistakes just like everyone else does. The good ones (not quacks or those with inflated egos) carry a lot of guilt when things go wrong. Yet we forget all this when a medical procedure is botched or when we lose a loved one at the operating table.
Thanks for this book Dr Gawande. I'll listen to it again in future!

Historia
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

I struggled with this book
Revisado: 03-20-24
I really struggled to get through this book.
While the narration is ultra good (thanks Laurence Fishburne), the book itself didn't do it for me. It's more like a show and tell story that went on for a tard too long.

For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

Revisado: 05-10-23
David's childhood is heartbreaking! That did not stop him from dreaming and going after his dreams. Zero excuses. If anything, the pain was like his fuel to keep charging forward. He's totally unbreakable. I would have wanted to listen to it with my teenage kids but the cursing is on full throttle - adults only. lol. Hopefully, David shall have a kids' version released real soon!
The podcasts were unmatched. Made listening to it on audible worth it.
Downside - there's lots of self work that would benefit from an accompanying PDF.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Revisado: 02-02-23
I couldn't wait for my day to open up to listen to this book. Traffic has never been so good!
I connected with Harry's pain on losing his Mum, Princess Diana. So raw!
I loved the complete daring honesty to share his story...including his recklessness along the way..wow! I know the Royals must be in shock about his audacity. Yet I can imagine how much healing he got in the process. Well done Prince Harry!

Revisado: 10-17-22
I felt Viola's pain, fears, joy, determination, healing, freedom...name it..I felt it as she read this book with such authentic emotion. I'm so happy that she has found peace despite her chaotic and traumatic childhood. Such grit really to be able to have gotten out and find her healing space. Thanks for sharing your journey Viola. Indeed looking at many celebrities, it is easy to forget the hard work that has gotten them there.

Eva never really wanted to be a mother - and certainly not the mother of a boy who ends up murdering seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much-adored teacher who tried to befriend him, all two days before his 16th birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with marriage, career, family, parenthood, and Kevin’s horrific rampage, in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin.
