Loved this one!
Revisado: 01-11-24
Although all of the books in the Heathcliff Lennox series have been thoroughly enjoyable listens, this one (Wreath of Red Roses) really stands out for me. For one thing, it's full of Foggy and Tubbs. It also includes historic references to The War of the Roses and Henry VI, which are such a fascinating and pivotal part of British history.

Historia
For all we know, or think we know, about Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, what we don’t know is far, far greater. In the duo’s first case, A Study in Scarlet, we learn that Holmes and Watson met on January 1st, 1881, and subsequently moved into an apartment together at 221b Baker Street. Their first case officially began on March 4th of that year, and it is argued that “The Adventure of the Resident Patient” possibly took place in October of 1881, depending on which version of the story you read. But what happened during the rest of 1881? Or all of 1882?

Great compilation of pastiches!
Revisado: 08-19-23
Being a fan of canon true SH pastiches, I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. I would have given 5 stars if the narrator had a British accent and we're a less breathy.

Here's why:
-Intelligent, independent and fun-loving female protagonist, who is assertive without being aggressive or anti-male.
-A humorous and witty whodunit with an abundance of clues, but is not so simple to puzzle out.
-Narration is brilliant, with each character being easily distinguishable.
-No gratuitous violence, misery or human suffering.
-And supernatural free!

Historia
Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936), was an English writer, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, lay theologian, biographer, and literary and art critic. Chesterton is best known for his fictional priest-detective Father Brown. In The Club of Queer Trades, narrator 'Cherub' Swinburne and his friends, the eccentric former judge Basil Grant, and Basil's younger brother, private detective Rupert Grant, encounter six curious mysteries, each involving someone who makes a living in an extraordinary and bizarre - in the language of the time a 'queer' - way.

Loved it!
First, the narration was spot on: the perfect narrator for this audio book.
Secondly, this is simply a great story. Actually, a collection of stories all culminating in the last chapter. The best description I can give of The Club of Queer Trades is in 1905 G K Chesterton wrote a cleverly humorous and insightful take on human society. It is still relevant today and well worth a listen.

It is 1904, and every day, the coaches plying between Lynmouth and Minehead scramble their way up and slither their way down the one-in-four gradient of Porlock Hill, the most feared hill in all of England. It takes six sturdy horses to drag a laden carriage to the top. There, the leading pair are detached and led back down into the village by a boy - a boy who knows how lucky he is to have been given such a responsible job at such a young age.

Cute and cheeky as ever! I've found each book in this series to be a satisfying listen. First because Ellery is just a great protagonist, but also the balance between the mystery and the personal drama aspect is well-done. Add to that witty dialogue and a straight forward writing style and the result is a series where there's something for every listener.

A favorite in the series!
Revisado: 12-20-21
I have always liked the Posie Parker series, despite 2 or 3 of the darker books with ABD, especially the one in which he dies. However, I have really enjoyed each of the stories since then with PP and Lovelace. And I especially liked the plot of this 12th book with its promising cliff hanger ending. Can't wait for book 13!
One of the chapters is out of sequence, but I found it did not detract from the plot or my enjoyment of the story.
