Historia
Summer, 1643: England is at war with itself. King Charles I has fled London, his negotiations with Parliament in tatters. The country is consumed by bloodshed. For Thomas Hill, a man of letters quietly running a bookshop in the rural town of Romsey, knowledge of the war is limited to the rumours that reach the local inn. When a stranger knocks on his door one night and informs him that the king's cryptographer has died, everything changes.

Pass on Narrator and Author in Future
Revisado: 06-22-22
The narrator reeked of Bela Lugosi instead of an Italian accent. It was so distracting that I wondered much if my dislike of the story was colored by the various characters effected by the narrator. I struggled to finish; pushed forward only to give it fair consideration. The research showed but the weaving suffered, the story strained and the metaphors disconnected. The narrator detracted from the experience throughout.
In future I will pass on the narrator; most likely the author as well.

In the kingdom, radical Protestants are driving the old religion into extinction, while the Protector's prolonged war with Scotland has led to hyperinflation and economic collapse. Rebellion is stirring among the peasantry. Matthew Shardlake has been working as a lawyer in the service of Henry's younger daughter, the lady Elizabeth.

I am Changed
Revisado: 06-14-22
When I saw the size of this book I was sure it had a lot of descriptive filler. But I was quickly invested. The fate of poor Simon wrenched me, and I realized everything that followed in a personal way. The slice of life in this Tudor England was made manifest by gripping accounts in every social strata. I have thought much about parallells then to now. Justice and equity denied ever turn hope to despair, leading to violence and death, and more wealth at the top. Thank goodness this country need not scrape to nobility. We elect our ruling class before and after the rich determine their course; a small distinction perhaps. I have been too much in thought about this book to begin another yet. I am changed.

Engaging!
Revisado: 01-04-20
Some reviewers said the story was plodding and without plot. However I found it engaging and thrilling in places, and difficult to walk away from. The chase scene had me twisted in arms and legs, assuring myself that our heroine would surely prevail. Surely our author would not have it otherwise. Surely so. Hopefully so...

Historia
Young Arthur doesn't understand why pulling a sword from a stone qualifies him for kingship. Old Merlin tells him a story of his childhood, when he first learned to trust in himself: a story about fighting dragons, clashing armies, and a young boy's prophetic dreams. Merlin's story inspires young Arthur with the confidence he will need to become a great king.
Masterfully narrated by film star Kevin Kline.
