Historia
Shortly after arriving on Cape Cod to spend a year by herself, Joan Anderson’s chance encounter with a wise, playful, and astonishing woman helped her usher in the transformations and self-discoveries that led to her ongoing renewal. First glimpsed as a slender figure on a fogged-in beach, Joan Erikson was not only a friend and confidante when one was most needed, but also a guide as Anderson stretched and grew into her unfinished self.

Disappointed
Revisado: 11-14-22
I was hoping that this would be an interesting insight into the mind of Joan Erickson. But from the first page the book is all about its author; and the writing is a constant stream of trite sayings, adverb-filled expressions painfully enunciated in an old-lady voice by the narrator. No, the word “our” does NOT have two syllables!! Had to return it as I couldn’t bear another moment.

Historia
Only God knew why Jillian Slater agreed to return to New Orleans on the news that her father had finally drunk himself to death. It's not like they were close. She hadn't seen him - or her grandmother, the ice queen - in almost 20 years. But when Adella Atwater, the manager of her grandmother's apartment house, called and said her expenses would be paid if she'd fly in for the burial, a free trip to New Orleans was too intriguing to resist.

Evangelical slog
Revisado: 05-28-17
Lackluster story, with an irritating main character in Gillian - a self-absorbed, spoiled, rude young woman with a cold fish of a grandmother. I was really mostly irritated by the evangelical tone of the book, which I totally did not see coming. There's nothing of it in the first three quarters of the listen. If I'd known it was going to get all "saved by Jesus" on me, I would never have started the book in the first place.
It's a long, boring slog until something FINALLY happens and the action picks up - and then quickly drops back off again. The narrator did a good job, considering all the different characters she had to voice, males, females, black, white, young, old, southern, California... maybe it would have been better to have a cast. But then again, maybe not worth it for this book. If you like conversion stories and don't mind a total lack of action, maybe this book is for you.
