Historia
In the summer of 1974 a heatwave blankets Boston and Mary Pat Fennessey is trying to stay one step ahead of the bill collectors. Mary Pat has lived her entire life in the projects of “Southie,” the Irish American enclave that stubbornly adheres to tradition and stands proudly apart. One night Mary Pat’s teenage daughter Jules stays out late and doesn’t come home. That same evening, a young Black man is found dead, struck by a subway train under mysterious circumstances. Mary Pat, propelled by a desperate search for her daughter, begins turning over stones best left untouched.

Robin Mikes set the mood and contributes well beyond the text to the atmosphere of this novel.

Repetitive and mundane as an uneventful hunt. Searching for Boone, I found very little in this to add to my regrettable Disney/ TV Fess Parker image of Daniel Boone.

Historia
Historically, major women artists have been excluded from the mainstream art canon. Aligned with the resurgence of feminism in pop culture, Broad Strokes offers an entertaining corrective to that omission. Art historian Bridget Quinn delves into the lives and careers of 15 brilliant female artists in this smart, feisty, educational, and enjoyable book.

A Necessary Subject on Thin Ice
Revisado: 12-17-19
Perhaps it was the influence of the breathy, gossiping style with which it is read but this is , in the end, shallow art history. There are anecdotes to add to one’s information but this “Intro to Art” handling of the powerful work executed by these remarkable women is a disservice to their collective legacy. The vocabulary necessary to communicate these important lives and the accompanying work does not seem to lie within the wheelhouse of this writer. The writing is as disappointing as the bad pun that is the book’s title.

Anecdotes More than Gripping History
Revisado: 01-26-19
Anecdotes are to be found here embedded in an all too familiar history for CW fans. Atmosphere is not achieved due to repetitive analogies ( like a...) and adjectives.

Historia
Witness to Gettysburg brings the bloodiest, most crucial battle of the Civil War to life through on-the-spot eyewitness accounts. From the courageous fighting men and officers to the civilians watching as the conflict raged through their towns, from the reporters riding with the regiments to the children excited or terrified by the titanic drama unfolding before them, each account stems from personal experience and blends with the whole to create a startlingly vivid tapestry of war. In their own words, and through the eyes of their closest aides, such commanders as Robert E. Lee, Jeb Stuart, and George Meade.

So Well Read...A lesson to the Overly Dramatic
Revisado: 08-06-13
Where does Witness to Gettysburg rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The content is unique to the Gettysburg books and well organized. Having read a dozen plus works on the battle, this one offers new texture, tone, and imagery...not easy to do.
The voices are carefully crafted and weighted correctly to fit the witness.....very few stereotypic cliched voices here - refreshing given what others have done to works like The Killer Angels etc. clearly expands one's visions of Gettysburg.
What about Bronson Pinchot’s performance did you like?
Varied, intelligently studied with an awareness of the usual traps in affecting Southern, female, and the anxious voices of combat. He has many interpretations and uses them very well.

Historia
July 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia is invading the North. General Robert E. Lee has made this daring and massive move with seventy thousand men in a determined effort to draw out the Union Army of the Potomac and mortally wound it. His right hand is General James Longstreet, a brooding man who is loyal to Lee but stubbornly argues against his plan. Opposing them is an unknown factor: General George Meade, who has taken command of the Army only two days before what will be perhaps the crucial battle of the Civil War.

Great book....but badly read
Revisado: 07-23-13
Would you listen to The Killer Angels again? Why?
I have read this book 4 times however this was the first audio experience. The power of this novel was completely undermined by a voice that tried to stretch its range, force stereotypic accents, and over dramatize the excitement and tension of battle. The voice carries no "experience" and generates an atmosphere that seems to be broadcast from an American suburban development- not a 19th century battlefield.
Great book, bad theater.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Killer Angels?
It is the best book in capturing the atmosphere of the unfolding drama of Gettysburg.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Yes. Completely. As described above
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It moved me to read it. Annoyed me to listen to it.
