Historia
They called her the Swedish Maiden: the beautiful young tourist who disappeared on a hot summer's day somewhere in North Oxford. Twelve months later, the case remained unsolved. On holiday in Lyme Regis, Chief Inspector Morse is startled to read a tantalizing article in The Times about the missing woman - an article which lures him back to Wytham Woods near Oxford...and straight into the most extraordinary murder investigation of his career.

Not so obvious that it was abridged.
Revisado: 09-19-24
I looked closely at the cover to make sure this wasn't abridged, but missed the info further down the listing. It is abridged, and very poorly, at that. I have read the book (twice) and even I was a little bit confused about what was going on. A lot of what makes Morse so enjoyable was slashed. A lot of small details that build the case were omitted. Shame. Kevin Whately did a great job narrating. I especially liked his Detective Lewis! 😉 He didn't sound so Oxford-trained when he did Morse but I'll forgive him for that. He is, after all, Kevin Whately. It would have been an excellent offering if it had not been abridged.

Wow! The Best History Course I've Listened To

So much fun!
Revisado: 09-03-24
Harl, who I recognize from his Great Courses offering on the Vikings, takes a very balanced view of the life, career, and legacy of Alexander of Macedon. No subject seems to fire the imagination of or distort the viewpoint of a historian like Phillip One-Eye's little boy. It's really hard to avoid relating with Alexander (and relating him to our heroes and villains) so intensely that we can no longer see the actual king as distinct from the images we have conjured up of him in our own minds. Harl does so much better than most. Well done!

Historia
Destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 CE, the ruins of Pompeii offer the best evidence we have of life in the Roman Empire. But the eruptions are only part of the story. In The Fires of Vesuvius, acclaimed historian Mary Beard makes sense of the remains. She explores what kind of town it was - more like Calcutta or the Costa del Sol? - and what it can tell us about "ordinary" life there. From sex to politics, food to religion, slavery to literacy, Beard offers us the big picture even as she takes us close enough to the past to smell the bad breath....

Captivating
Revisado: 08-17-24
Like everything I have ever read or watched from Mary Beard, this book is down-to-earth, frank, and good-natured. That Beard loves her subject is plain. That she is not afraid to look at it in the hard, cold, light of reality is equally clear. Delightfully free of romantic conceits and sentimental claptrap, this book is a joy from start to finish.
